CROYDON A man who punched a 96-year-old man, blinding him in one eye, has been spared jail. Croydon Crown Court was shown CCTV images, left, of Stephen Gordon, 44, punching Shah Chaudhury, who uses two walking sticks, after brushing against him in a tram travelling between Sandilands and east Croydon, in South London, last December. Judge Kenneth Macrae convicted Gordon, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, of causing grievous bodily harm to the Second World War veteran. He sentenced Gordon to a three-year supervision order, requiring him to receive psychiatric treatment.

perhaps if it had been the judges 96 yr old father he would have had a different viewpoint.I would bet the "miscreant" is a middle aged longtime user of cannabis.Does that ring any bells re his supposed mental state and reason for mitigation. At every turn we are told that nothing is anybodies fault..The latest is obesity.Whatever happened to the idea of accepting responsibility for your own actions?
R.Hart, sutton coldfield,
I'm absolutely amazed that Mr Chaudhury survived. In view of his age perhaps attempted murder might have been a more appropriate charge. (Obviously the perpetrator could still be allowed to walk free.)
Markham Smith, London,
Another case of political correctness gone mad. What does it take to get a custodial sentence these days?Oh yes ,I remember-being a pensioner and not paying your council tax!For goodness sake someone stand up and be counted and bang this crim up for a good long stetch-when will the judiciary and the government realize ,we, the law abiding public have had enough of this bleeding heart liberalism?
Tim davies, cardiff, south wales
Is Broadmoor full? Surely it has the resources to deal with a dangerous criminal who has attacked in this way?
Verbant, Malmesbury, UK
This is outrages, how would you justify the crime he has committed. 96 years old guy only lost one eye he is got anotheone and he is not going to live log anyway, so it's not big deal. Gordon wasnât a young man or teenager who was going through teenage spur. He was 44-year-old lunatic coming out of the court while smiling with jubilation on our justice system. He doesnât need psychiatric treatment, what he need is to spend three years behind bar. Oops I forgot
our prision are full. We will see what next.
Asad, South Croydon, England
This is disgraceful. When will common sense and decency prevail to ensure violent criminals like this one get locked up and made to serve respectable sentences. At least they can not cause problems for the law-abiding citizens when they are in prison!
As for the person who tried to start a race issue - wise up, and stop trying to stir things using an irrelevant issue. People are already disgusted by this case. To try and include skin colour is simply tedious.
Felicity, London, England
Is Broadmoor still there or is it now an executive dwelling estate? If the thug can't be given five years hard labour because he's a criminal loony then Broadmoor is where he should spend time.
Verbant, Malmesbury, UK
I am flabergasted that such an unprovoked attack goes unpunished. The individual whom attack this hero is treated like the victim. It is a shame that the Civil and Criminal laws protect the thefts, murders, and other perverted low lifes!
John Dunbar, Chicago, United States
One wonders whether the sentence would have been harsher had an elderly white man been attacked. Sentences like this send out the wrong signals to yobs and do not do justice to the victim.
Hamad lone, Thornton Heath, England
I am sure that the nice young man will be a model citizen in future and that the 96 year old war veteran is grateful that he has been given a second chance.
For god sake this was an unprovoked attacked on an elderly citizen who fought for his country and I think the least we could have done in this case would be to send the thug to jail. I hope that if this thug injures or kills someone else during his 3 year treatment the judge will be removed from office.
This country is close to anarchy because there is no real deterrent to crime any more as everyone knows there is no more space in jails so they will be very unlikely to be punished.
Joe Kellie, Edinburgh, Scotland
What's the loss of an old man's eye compared with the inalienable human rights of a psychopath? Anyone fancy a modest wager that the miscreant will be in the newspapers again within the next five years?
David Masu, Zürich,
Oh that's ok then. Beat up an old defenceless pensioner and get away with it. Fail to pay the poll tax as a pensioner because you cannot afford it and get sent to jail. I am so glad to live in a country that does not have double standards and looks after their old age pensioners so well. Makes me proud to be British.
Adrian, Weston Super Mare, North Somerset
A sentence that I hope the Attorney-General will appeal against. Someone this dangerous needs to be kept in a secure unit until they are no longer a danger to others.
And shame on the other bus users for making him stand.
Neil, London,
