LONDON The commander in charge of police who shot dead the innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes told a jury yesterday that she would not have done anything differently.

Cressida Dick, who has since been promoted to Deputy Assistant Commissioner, said that she had thought “hundreds and hundreds of times” about what happened. She said suggestions that she could have lied in court about the events before the shooting were “outrageous”.

Ms Dick faces possible disciplinary action over the killing of Mr de Menezes, 27, at Stockwell Tube station, in South London, the Old Bailey was told. The Metropolitan Police is on trial over alleged “catastrophic” errors leading to his death on July 22, 2005, when he was mistaken for a suicide bomber.

Ms Dick said that at the time she ordered Mr de Menezes to be stopped – 10.05am – she believed that he was still in the ticket hall of the station. But two police loggists had recorded that the Brazilian was “down the escalators” and heading for a train.

The trial continues.
