THE father of Madeleine McCann spoke of his distress yesterday, six months after her disappearance, and said he hoped “she is being treated like a princess”.
Gerry McCann wrote in his internet diary: “It is so painful for us simply being separated, but all the more distressing when we have to speculate about the situation Madeleine finds herself [in].
“We have no idea whether she is suffering but we have to hope and pray that she is being treated like a princess, as she deserves.”
Last night he and his wife Kate attended prayers and a vigil for Madeleine at the church of St Mary and St John near their home in Rothley, Leicestershire. Scores of local people attended.
Rob Gladstone, the vicar, said: “Everyone has been shocked and it’s a way for the community to express their support.” There were also vigils in Kate McCann’s home city of Liverpool and Praia da Luz, the town in Portugal where Madeleine disappeared in May. Friends of the family were praying for her in Glasgow.
Earlier in the day, the McCanns released a new photograph of their daughter on a Shetland pony as part of a fresh appeal for her safe return.
“Madeleine is a beautiful little person who deserves a loving and happy life,” said Kate McCann.
It has emerged that a Portuguese teacher told police she believed she spotted the missing girl at Barcelona airport a few weeks after her disappearance. The report is expected to be examined by the McCanns’ own investigators at the Spanish agency Metido 3.
While Portuguese detectives continue to work on the theory that the McCanns may have been involved in their daughter’s disappearance, the couple believe it is most likely she is in Spain, Portugal or north Africa, where there have been several suspected sightings.
It emerged last week that the McCanns’ legal team had only recently been told of the Barcelona link.
If Madeleine is not found soon, reports of her being seen around the world are likely to emerge for years to come. Senior investigators say the most likely scenario is that she is dead.
The McCanns have been dismayed by reports last week that tests had proved their daughter’s body had been in their hire car.
Clarence Mitchell, the couple’s spokesman, said the police had not given details about the test and it was understood analysis was continuing.
Results from the DNA testing will be crucial if the police are to pursue the theory that the McCanns could have been involved. Inconclusive tests would be likely to lead to the inquiry being scaled down.
The McCanns want to ensure police continue to pursue the abduction theory. The inquiry has three official suspects, the McCanns and Robert Murat, an expatriate Briton in Praia da Luz.

48 days or so to Christmas apparently.
48 days nearer to another horrible day in the life of the McCann family.
Poor souls. The nightmare continues.

Does anyone know if Chief Inspector Amoral had access to that car before DNA evidence was collected please?

I find all the supposed sightings of Madeleine interesting. If I thought I saw her somewhere I would take immediate action. What is wrong with people?
Kim Righetti, Upland, Calif. USA
Who are these people? A steady, drip, drip, drip of tidbits of "information", constant and high level exposure in the world media. I've never been one for conspiracy and illuminati theories but they begin to make me doubt myself.

Antony, like so many 'religious' people, I fear you stick to the letter of the faith rather than the spirit.
Aren't love, truth and compassion the same in any context, irrespective of the label?
Why not try it?
Christina, Essex,
Antony, This is the local Parish Church, The area in which they live. It doesn't matter what the denomination or the building. It is a central place of worship. Anglican, Catholic - we are Christians.
barbara, harrogate,
Let's not be judgemental. Obviously this couple is in deep suffering about their daughter's disappearance, and that nobody can quetion. Wether they had anything to do with it or not is for the police to find out. As for the way the investigation was conducted, I am quite conviced that the best way was followed. Faced with a scenario were a little girl could have been abducted, the main worry was to try to trace back a possible way to find her - that's what the police did for almost 4 months. Only after eliminating every possibility that she was taken away did they turn to the homicide hypothesis. Everyone knows that this situations appeal to the desire of well intentioned as well as evil people to report possible sightings for years. But that line has been proved unlikely - only people that don't know anything about criminal investigation keep on putting questions about what was done - stop that. The most feasible possibility is that Madeleine is dead.
L.M., Portugal,
They are people who are able to think for themselves and think outside of the box. If more of us would concetrate on doing that, and worry less about what other people are doing., the world would be in a much better place. Whose business is it anyway what religion the McCan's follow? It's theirs, and it God's, but it's certainly not yours or mine.

Anthony- times have moved on Thank Goodness since you were a child. The Church is in their local community. What does it matter. We frequently meet with fellow Catholic, Anglican and Methodists for worship, friendship and to share our Christian beliefs.
barbara, harrogate,
The Mccanns seem to have forgotten which branch of Christianity they belong to as well... one minute we hear that they are Catholics and meet The Pope as such, the next we hear that they worship in Anglican churches.
As a child we were taught to respect other peoples beliefs but as Catholics not to actually worship or take Communion in non Catholic Churches. It is confusing.
Anthony Fenech, London, UK
Is this show of religious superstition just a cynical charade by the McCanns?
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
The Police ought to have conducted...and been allowed to continue, their enquiries with more discretion. Any investigation of this nature seeks to eliminate the most obvious including those persons closest to the "victim" and reveals several avenues to examine. Whatever the reason, the police have been unable to do this..Of course it it unthinkable that anyone could harm a child, but we know they do...!!! we only hear what the press publish, the police will doubtless have formed a view based on much circumstantial evidence...evidence that for them, clearly does'nt add up at present...remember this..the forensic analysis could certainly assist in eliminating the McCann's as well as proving any involvement. However once established it is harder to refute. The tragedy of this case is one of "too many self appointed experts". The police in Portugal have a job to do...let them do it..
M. Pierce, Beckenham, kent
I find it absolutely unthinkable that Jerry and Kate have had anything to do with their daughter's disappearance. We need to focus on the task in hand....'find Madeleine' and not waste any more time! They have been through enough and hopefully when Madeleine is found it will all be quite clear and they will finally have their name cleared.!
Cathy, Kidderminster, Worcs,
If Madeleine was ever in that car, then the hire company staff & every person who had access to the vehicle from May 3 - 27 is obviously as equally suspect as are her parents for their use of the vehicle from 28 May onward.
Have these been eliminated, if not given aguido status ?
Who introduced the McCanns to the hire company ?
Were McCanns 'guided' to hire that particular car by persons who wanted to incriminate them?
