Jet-ski rider fined for tormenting dolphins
BANFF A man has been fined £500 for harassing a school of dolphins while on a jet-ski, in what is believed to be the first such conviction in Britain. Nicol Wood, 22, right, admitted piloting his jet-ski recklessly close to dolphins in the Moray Firth. One witness, John Smith, told Banff Sheriff Court that he was taking tourists on a sea-life cruise when he saw the jet-skier approaching at speed.
He said that Wood stopped and started splashing the water with his left foot and hand, apparently in an attempt to attract the dolphins. He then began moving at speed among the dolphins and was seen turning around in circles, churning up the water.

Is it not completely obvious why John Smith from the Puffin boat wants Mr Wood and others banned from jet skis ?
Wood did no more than enjoy the dolphins company from the comfortable seat of his jet ski...you, me, anyone would have done the same given the chance. No dolphin was injured !
They probably even enjoyed it...I have witnessed Dolphins chasing jet skis for fun !
Get real Mr Smith....the dolphins of Moray do not belong to you despite you making a living off them !!
Charles Read, Chamonix,
I think that this whole buisness is silly. He did not actully harm anything it was a case of possibiltys.
The law should look at themselves and make a test for jetskis so people know what the bounderies are. That man didnt go out with the inttent to harm anythin..just didnt know what he was doing wasnt allowed.
John Smith has been trying to get these jet skis banned as its bad for buissness. How can wild life be wild when they have a boat chasing them around?
Jack Finning, Aberdeen,
£500 fine is vastly inadequate, they should have confiscated his jet ski.
V Tan, London,
These machines should be banned - at total menace. Our summer holidays can be ruined by these louts tearing up and down within yards of the beach. Noisy and dangerous.
In Australia there are laws as to how close these things can get to the beach (400 meters between the red flags and 200m elsewhere).
Come on law makers do something before somebody gets killed.
