Two teenagers have been charged with the murder of a young Muslim described by his school and family as a perfect pupil and a model son.
Police are continuing to investigate the motive behind the stabbing of Ahmed Hassan, 17, who died from a single wound in the back at a railway station in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
The Heckmondwike Grammar School pupil, who was studying for four A levels and hoped to become a lawyer, was attacked as he waited with friends to catch a Saturday afternoon train to Manchester. They had planned to go shopping at the Trafford Centre to buy clothes to celebrate the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.
Witnesses said that four or five white youths, who appeared to be drunk, arrived on a train from Huddersfield and spotted the Asian teenagers. The attack that followed was understood to have been unprovoked.
Dave Poole, a shop worker at the station, spoke yesterday of the panic of passers-by as the incident unfolded. “It was terrible. There was a sudden commotion in the entrance way. I could see people screaming and running away from the platform,” he said.
Mr Poole, 51, said he left his shop to find Ahmed lying on the ground. “He was covered in blood and he was obviously very badly hurt, but he was definitely conscious. We could all hear him moaning and groaning. It must have been horrible for his friends.”
It is understood that an off-duty police officer gave chase as Ahmed’s assailants fled, and captured a suspect.
The dead boy’s family, who own a textile business, were described by friends as “grief-stricken and absolutely devastated”.
Ahmed’s head teacher, Mark Tweedle, said that Ahmed was studying A levels in politics, mathematics, law and economics in preparation to read law at university.
“He was popular with staff and peers alike, a thoughtful and articulate young man who was gentle, kind and sensitive,” he said.
“As one of his teachers remarked: if the world was full of Ahmed Hassans the world would be a very much better place.” Special assemblies were held at the school yesterday. A book of condolence has been opened and a memorial service will be held this week.
Speculation that a racial motive lay behind the killing was widespread yesterday in Muslim districts of Dewsbury and its neighbouring mill town, Batley, where Ahmed lived.
Dewsbury was the home town of Mohammed Sidique Khan, the leader of the suicide bombers who attacked London in July 2005, and racial tensions locally have been exploited by the British National Party. In the 2005 general election, the BNP received a higher vote — 5,066 — in Dewsbury than in any other constituency in Britain.
West Yorkshire Police said that they were keeping an open mind about the motive for the attack. It is understood that no clear evidence of racist intent has yet been found.
Khizar Iqbal, a Dewsbury Conservative councillor and the local authority’s Cabinet member with responsibility for community safety, said that it would be “completely wrong to speculate about a motive”.
“We should be challenging the gang culture of teenagers carrying knives and using them. As a society, we can’t allow this to go on,” he said.
However, a Batley councillor, Mahmood Akhtar, said that members of the Muslim community in Dewsbury and Batley were convinced that Ahmed was the victim of a race attack.
“It’s too soon to be certain, but most local residents are saying that the only reason the boy was targeted was the colour of his skin,” he said. Colin Auty, a BNP councillor in Dewsbury, denied that his party was responsible for inflaming racial tensions. He said he was sorry to learn of the boy’s death but claimed that the stabbing would have received far less attention had the victim been white and the suspected killers Asian.
Prayers for the dead boy were said at Dewsbury Minster on Sunday evening. The Bishop of Pontefract, the Right Rev Tony Robinson, said yesterday that his “thoughts and prayers and those of Christians locally” were with Ahmed’s family and friends.
The railway station was operating yesterday but some areas remained cordoned off as police searched for the murder weapon.
Two teenagers aged 17 and 18 were last night charged with murder and are due to appear before Batley magistrates this morning. Two men aged 19 and 24 who were also arrested in connection with the incident have been released without charge.

I am an asian woman and have been living in Dewsbury for the last 5 years, and all i can say about the place that it is BLEAK. Coming from another very multicultural city in England, i can see how segregated and hostile Dewsbury is.I knew Ahmed and am so saddened that such a lovely person was taken away in such a brutal way. Both sections of the community (Asians and white) are to blame, in terms of their ignorance and arrogance towards each other, resulting in further divide and hatred. I strongly feel that work needs to be done in terms of community cohesion and race relation. Stop blaming the BNP and blame the government. The press insight's hatred, reading the paper (local press) over the last few weeks, it disturbed me,raising issues that are likely to stir trouble, create further resentment. I feel there is no future for me and my son in Dewsbury, and am seriously considering moving back to a multicultural society where people respect ,accept and value each other.Sad but true

Decent, hardworking, good, friendly, knowledgable people of Britain are being subjected to erroneous propaganda to make them fight amongst one another.
A political party is especially letting down the poor of Britain by encouraging infighting amongst them by provoking hatred about council housing and unemployment benefit.
World poverty could be wiped out within days if we could just encourage peace and understanding. The military expenditure of the world is huge $495.3 billion is spent annually by the U.S. alone. Saudi Arabia spends $25.4 billion (large amount for such a small country). Only $175 billion would be required to give healthcare, education and clean water to every poor person in the world. No more starvation and suffering.
World peace is what is needed to end human suffering.
Political parties that provoke anger and misunderstanding amongst young people no matter what colour (black, white or brown) should be banned. We have a right to protect our children.

This report is yet another attempt by the far -left and the newsmedia to infer that the British National Party are in some way responsible for this apalling incident. As yet there is no evidence that this incident was racially motivated. Let us not forget that national newspapers which also express opinions critical of muslims and Islam are also widely in circulation in the Dewsbury area, as they are nationally - thus are we reasonably to point the finger of blame in their direction also?!
Earlier this year a young white man in north Manchester was deliberately ran over and killed by a car driven by a group of young asian men on a petrol staion forecourt. In this case neither the newsmedia, the far-left or the police have assumed that this incident had a racial motive.as they are now doing in Dewsbury. As yet no-one has been charged in connection with the murder in Manchester.

this is a disgusting act of hatred why are inoccent people dying in such an horrible way what is happening to this country i live in dewsbury and just latley there been so many deaths ,something must be done , my heart goes out to the family of that young boy .
kat, dewsbury,
Having been at the same sixth form as ahmed hassan it is such a shame that an innocent lad was killed in such a way. It is clearly a racist attack and justice should be given to those who killed him. Why was he attacked? Asians have every right to live without fear in this society. As for people that compare asians to terrorists then they are narrow minded. Asians are not all the same we are individuals who want to live in peace. As for the BNP they can all rot in hell. Britain should exist as a multi cultural society and we should all respect each others religion.
Susie MCGull, Harrogate,
as a resident of dewsbury living amongs"t this ,alot of people do not understand the great changes that we have seen over the past few years, the goverment call it intergration ,we call it being overtaken , all our traditions are fading out because everything british seems to offend the multicultural society, everytime you seem to speak about something these days you have to think about what you are saying ,because if you say the wrong thing you can upset the community you live in and they always play the racist card .
g.d, dewsbury,
This attack may have been racist, a group of youths for no apparent reason murdering someone different from themselves. Any political party that incites murder and resentment from the majority against a minority for frivilous reasons (fighting over peanuts) should be banned because it is provoking hatred and violating our human rights. The world is getting smaller and we should forget our racial differences.
$800 billion dollars has just been spent on a futile war by America. $6 billion at least by Britain. So why blame immigrants for poor services in education, the nhs or housing.
The off duty policeman was brilliant and deserves an honour and the head teacher had very kind words. However it is when people from a minority do not recieve justice, when the perpretrators are never caught or receive more lenient sentences from respected authorities that anger becomes inflamed.' Who cares its just a Paki or Black ' attitude by the police and judicial system provokes a backlash.

The issue here is not just about race. I think it's high time something was done about the youth of nowadays carrying knives. I mean it's just everywhere young teenages regardless of colour or religion carrying Knives and not being afraid to use them, and as a result innocent lives are lost.
I think we should in honour of such a young life being loss, as a tribute to Ahmed learn some thing from this. Knives are not cool to have. Lets all of us parents, teachers, councillars, whites, blacks start teaching this simple message to the youth of today maybe then we will have a brighter future.
Faz, Lancashire,
I cannot believe that Patricia from Ipswich (below in the comments) is sidetracking from the real issue at hand to peddle her own worthless two cents on discrimination.
This attack is absolutely horrendous. The article brought tears to my eyes and I cannot begin to imagine what the family and friends of this young boy are going through.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the grieving family and friends during this difficult time. Every effort must be made to find these ruthless and cold-blooded killers and bring them to justice swiftly.
Diane Parker, Surrey, England
Why do you refer to the victim as a "young muslim"?
Would you have described the victim by way of his religion had he not been a muslim? e.g. a young Presbyterian - a young Mormon - a young Buddhist.
What's his religion got to do with it.
How would anyone know his religion in any event? Did he have a label round his neck?
alan maddox, wirral , england
i think people are being sidetracked from the real issue here which is this young boy was attacked by selfish teenagers and young criminals like this should be locked away and the government should be tackling gang crimes etc in britain. it is wrong to link this incident to racism or to the fact that dewsbury is the area where mohammad siddique khan was from, that has nothing to do with this and it is unnecessarily creating unrest amingst people and has resulted in the muslim population of dewsbury and batley to think that the crime was a racist one.
Ayesha, dewsbury, west yorkshire
I would like to ask Patricia from Ipswich, if she actually believes that Ahmed had âMuslimâ engraved in his forehead before he was executed by these Nazis, who now I am afraid, live amongst us.
I am sick and tired of the majority of people in this country holding stereotypical views of people with a different colour of skin. I hope these Nazis go down for a very long time.
Member of the Empire, U.K,
This attack on an innocent youth defies belief. Let our thoughts be Ahmedâs family and friends at what is a tragic end to the year for them all.
I agree with the comments made by Sam Fowler, regarding the hatred which the BNP are preaching - equivalent to the extremist views held by the fundamentalists today and also those of Nazi Germany in the 1940s.
Patriciaâs perception of the statistics which she quotes should be taken into context: she should not just believe twisted propaganda quoted to her by right-wing extremists.
Hatred breeds hatred.
Perhaps if people did not treat other differently, or have hatred towards those who are visibly different from themselves, it would be more difficult for religious extremists to recruit and brainwash young people who have experienced hatred towards them.
The government should now be doing more to promote âAcceptanceâ - not just âToleranceâ.
Live and let live, U.K,
Instead of bickering over the white/asian issue, why can't we all just have some compassion for this innocent victim of a senseless crime? we all laugh, cry and feel pain in the same language, regardless of our race or religion. please let's spare a thought for the poor family of Ahmed who are experiencing a living nightmare instead of tainting this tragedy by playing the trump card for the BNP and whoever else! Tis the season of goodwill for muslims and christians alike. trouble is it seems as though there isn't enough of it to go around.... i pray for peace in the hearts and minds of all.
s.chaus, dews, uk
Sam Fowler....
Thats rather a sweeping statement, which in itself inplies that white people are inherently racist, or if someone isn't a socialist / Marxist, then they must be a right wing racist.
According to people like you it seems that if you vote for anyone other than Labour, ie Conservative that also inplies racism...
Shane., clitheroe, lancs
This attack was absolutely dreadful. But why do we never hear of the many attacks perpetrated by Muslims against white people?
It took the BNP to bring it to the public's notice and the government reluctantly conceded that the majority of racist attacks are by Muslims against white people, a truly alarming statistic when one considers that Muslims are such a small minority in Britain.
This economy with the truth is creating a truly dangerous situation in this country, it breeds misunderstanding, anger and resentment.
Patricia, Ipswich, England
Teenage rivalry is a biological feature of maturation, and the human race has known about it ever since we first developed the power to observe, reflect and think, millions of years ago. For this rivalry to develop into knife crime, within the context of twenty-first century British society, is the inevitable consequence of abolishing our patrolling police force. Bring back bobbies on the beat! They will cost us more in taxes than patrol cars do, but patrol cars have no deterrent effect whatever. Teenage knife crime is clear evidence of that fact.
Edmund Burke, Kingston upon Thames, England
Why would you do that?
Adam Webb, Mk, UK
Trust the councillors to start attacking each other, when will politicians learn that dispensing blame, or seeking to excuse acts like this, is totally counter productive.
We need a serious crackdown on people carrying knives in this country, there should be a mandatory FIVE year sentence without parole for anyone caught carrying a knife without lawful excuse.
What a waste of a promising young life.
Michael Rigby, Blackburn, England
Due to the abscence of an effective deterrent, we are going to have to get more used to crimes of this kind.
Michael, Windsor,
It is high time the government got tough on those racists from the BNP. Start by detaining these right-wing terrorists for 28 days and then sentence them for possessing material that may be useful for a terrorist. Because racism is terrorism.
Ah, but I forgot, they are white, so no charges can be made....
Sam Fowler, London,
