HULL A teenager who falsely accused a taxi driver of rape has been jailed after the man proved his innocence by producing a recorded conversation of her repeatedly asking him for sex.
Seonad Campbell, who has three A levels and hoped to go to university, ordered a taxi after becoming drunk at a party three weeks after her 18th birthday. When she arrived at 4am at her family home in East Cowick, near Goole, East Yorkshire, she told her father that she had been raped. He immediately contacted the police.
The driver was able to establish his innocence when it emerged that he had used his mobile phone to make a video recording of Campbell during their journey from Pontefract, West Yorkshire. The footage showed the teenager repeatedly asking the driver to have sex with her. He said that he had agreed to her request and the couple had consensual sex in a lane near her home.
In court she pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was jailed for eight months by Judge Roger Thorn, QC, who told Campbell that her lies might have had devastating consequences.

Actually Steve Bush,
If you talk to American DAs that specialize in sex crimes you will find thta most rape cases which are reported are true, but the justice systems are geared in favour of the defendent. For instance it is not illegal in England to have sex with someone against their will, only to have sex with them against their will when it can be proved beyond reason that you did not have reasonable grounds for believing they consented.
if the man had raped the girl and said he was too drunk to realise she did not consent he would be let off as innocent as has happened several times in the last year. Yet the girl is too drunk to remember that she did consent and she is imprisoned. She did not set out to lie, she honestly thought she had been raped.
In England men have claimed to have raped women during sleepwalking spells and have got off scot free even though all doctors have said this is impossible (trying staying asleep when someone is screaming and hitting you).
Chris, uk,
Jo,
Er, has it escaped your notice that there has been a huge increase in the number of men claiming to have been raped in recent years. Are they all liars too?
perhaps if the media focused ont he thousands of rapes each year instead of the few false claims there would be tougher action on rapists, but instead the media focus on the exception. No-one cares thta in a recent survey one out of two young men claimed to thing it was ok to have sex without consent, and that in an anonouymous American university survey 4 out of ten men admitted to have carried out a sex crime against a woman they knew. (lets not forget that drinks are often spiked with GHB too, which increase libido)
Even murderers are getting off with their crimes by saying that the victim consented to se. the worlds end suspect is a convicted sex killer and his dna was found on the victims, but he claims it was consensual sex with the two teenagers he had never met before so he walks free!
Andy, uk,
Over the Years, there has been numerous times women have made this claim, usually when they had no money for the fare and I call the cops. It is one reason I have three video cameras in my car. Unfortunately, in the U.S. they can't be arrest for making false allegations. If a drunk female offers sex, I decline for the very reason of what happened in the article. I do retain the segment of video and I give the female a card stating for her to call or email me when she is sober. I than offer to send them the video clip of their antics.

Dear Ellen, Women do not *report cases of rape* to the police, they make accusations of rape. The low conviction rate could just as illogically be interpreted as meaning a high rate of women lying. Rape accusations are much easier nowadays due to widespread awareness of confidentiality rules so we can no longer simply equate reports to real cases as you do.
Steve Bush, Cirencester, UK
To Ellen, Ipswich:-
That may be true and a very sad thing, but putting an innocent man in prison for a crime that he did not commit does not help 'balance the books.'
It is not acceptable to lie about having been raped any more than it is to commit rape, and until the feminists get round that one and accept that women who lie about sexual assault do untold damage to the genuine victims and should not go unpunished, the sooner the police forces will be more inclined to believe a woman if they know they lie they may face jail.
We are not talking here about a rape victim - we are talking about a liar, plain and simple.
Warren Blackwell, Daventry, England
There are far more false allegations than genuine rapes. These women are the abusers.
jo, london, uk
As for 'preferential treatment of women' - only one case in 13 of rape which is reported to the police ever results in a conviction. For every lying woman there must ten frustrated, damaged victims and ten arrogant rapists walking free for lack of evidence.
Ellen, Ipswich, UK
Thank goodness for a piece of 'proper usage of the law'. I can only hope that this sensible attitude will be reflected throughout the administration of legislation that applies to the criminal act of rape. It should not be forgotten that this area of law is a very 'grey' one and as often as not those who are 'guilty' often get away with it as the law itself on the subject is ambiguous to say the least. The moral argument should stand that it is wrong to commit such an offence and just as wrong to wrongly accuse someone of said offence.
C.S-U, Edinburgh, UK
At last! Maybe now the courts will concede that women are not always the victim and are quite capable of perjuring themselves for whatever strange reasons their fluffy minds have concocted. Unfortunately this does not make up for the many many men who have been wrongly convicted of rape because of a womans' lies BUT it's a start and perhaps now the courts and in particular the judges will take a tougher line with regard to sentencing.
Carole, Gramat, France
8 months isn't long enough ...
Benzo, Nr Chelmsford,
This case deserves to be made known far and wide. I shall certainly do my bit.
To Ash of UK, I don't have one of these new-fangled mobile phones, but I gather they record sound as well as pictures. That's how the judge knew that the taxi driver didn't have a screwdriver off-camera threatening the woman.
A very similar thing happened in a novel called 'Disclosure' by Michael Crichton which is based on a true story. In this story, a woman's advances are accidentally recorded on someone's answering machine.
Chris Manning, Monbulk, Australia
This type of occurance is not uncommon. There has been a lot of loud noise proffered in defense of women who are allegedly raped, to the point where the normal rules of justice are being called into question to favour the woman.
This case, and many others like it, should be a stark reminder that women can be and are just as deceitful as men and that the rules of justice should be applied accordingly.
In this case, justice has been done and an evil woman, who has further put back the cause of genuine rape victims should spend the time realising that she has only served the interests of rapists.
Jack Bloxam, Edinburgh,
The cabbie was foolish for having sex with her, but she was evil for what she did. Unfortunately the world is full of women who for their own inadequacies and perverted minds lie about men.
What upsets me the most is that for every one female caught lying like this there are thousands who get away with slandering men.
I spent years in courts fighting slander used to deny me access to my son. What disgusted me recently was to find that my son's social workers were concealing from the courts files which proved the mother was lying.
It's time men overthrew this tyranny of falsehoods by women
Simon Gunson, Wellington , New Zealand
He was onbiously stone cold sober and realised that the girl might only be having sex with him because she was very drunk as he had the presence of mind to video her. it says something about his character that he would have sex with a teenager when he knew she was too drunk. I would also like to point out that the video does not prove a thing as earlier this year a teacher was proven not guilty of sexually abusing a teenager even though there was a video of her performing oral sex on him. It turned out that he had a screwdriver in his hand off camera and was threatening her. Anyman who acted in the way this taxi driver did is capable of threatening a teenager.
Ash, uk,
"In court she pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and was jailed for eight months by Judge Roger Thorn, QC, who told Campbell that her lies might have had devastating consequences."
Only eight months? She could easily have ruined that man's life!
