A widow whose husband died after being stoned by a gang of boys said yesterday: “Justice has not been done.”
Linda Norton, 56, was speaking after the manslaughter convictions of the five boys, for the death of her husband Ernest, 67, were quashed. Each received a 12-month supervision order for violent disorder yesterday.
They had served 55 days in youth detention for the attack on Mr Norton while he played cricket with his son James, 17, in February 2006.
“I’m feeling numb again. I was not expecting one year,” Mrs Norton said.
“Justice has not been done, but that is the way the law is and that’s all you can do unless they change the law. I do not believe that this has even taught them a lesson.”
The Court of Appeal quashed the manslaughter convictions after it decided that there was not enough proof that their actions had caused the death of Mr Norton. The father of two was at the Erith Leisure Centre in Kent when he collapsed with a heart attack as the children, aged between 10 and 13, jeered, spat at him and threw stones. One struck him on the temple and fractured his cheekbone.
They were convicted of manslaughter and violent disorder at the Old Bailey in August. Their convictions for violent disorder were upheld.
Detective Inspector Clive Hayes, of the Metropolitan Police, said after the hearing yesterday: “In my view the sentence does not fit the circumstances of the crime in this case. That is in no way a criticism of the judge, but a criticism of the law, which does not allow a stiffer sentence being given.”

This man had a heart attack because of the attack from these boys. He might have lived for many years if they had not interfered with his life. They should have been charged with manslaughter. They were guilty, and now they are laughing with their friends, on how clever they were.

Probably isn't definately. Definately is required to secure a conviction.
If your arguments are applied that would mean that you would be guilty of murder if, for example, you had a car accident with the man and that caused a heart attack.

What planet are you living on, jo from london? Okay they didn't actually walk up and stab or shoot him or beat him to death, but their actions were probably the reason why Mr. Norton had a heart attack. Of course they killed him and to say they didn't brings your sense of reality into question. It is because of people like you who have ruined this country and took it a level where the criminal comes off better than the law abiding citizen.
David Hazell, Birmingham, UK,
Isn't everybody missing the point? THEY DIDN'T KILL HIM. He had a heart attack.
jo, london, uk
I suppose had they been using a mobile phone while skateboarding, they would have gone to jail. But stoning a person to death, don't be silly. However, could it be that the judges are looking at sharia law, where stoning is allowed. After all half the country seems to be heading that way

This case sums up New Labours law and order policy of the past 10 years, hardworking, decent, white working class people getting done over by liberal politically correct policing.
darren, london,
Nice to know the legal system is doing such a fantastic job of protecting us from violent thugs and teaching young people that some behaviour will not be tolerated. Well done to all involved!
keith lodge, middlesbrough,
Once again the law and system protect the guilty !!!
Justice is dead, a concept gone like right and wrong,Responsibility and shame.
I used to believe that as a law abiding citizen behind me stood the Police , the judiciary and the Law makers.
No longer do I believe this , it is the criminal who is backed by these now with the law abiding just seen as a fool.
I have no faith that the system will protect my family nor myself.
So well done Nu-labour ,put your reforms of law and order down as another great success anlong with immegration and education.
Tough on crime , tough on the causes of crime.
Don`t make me laugh.
Tough on the law abiding , soft on the law breakers !!
