Two sisters wept and their mother screamed abuse when all three were found guilty yesterday of turning a blind eye to the horrific murder of a young woman in their house.
Sabia Rani, 19, was systematically beaten and abused by her husband, Shazad Khan, over three months at the home that they shared in Leeds. When she died she had 15 broken ribs and bruising over 85 per cent of her body and, according to a pathologist, looked like the victim of a catastrophic road accident.
Khan was convicted of her murder a year ago. Yesterday his mother, Phullan Bibi, 52, his sisters, Nazia Naureen, 28, and Uzma Khan, 23, and Uzma’s husband Majid Hussain, 28, were all found guilty of allowing the death of a vulnerable adult under the Domestic Violence Crime and Victims Act 2004.
The judge told the family that they should be prepared for custodial sentences before they were bailed overnight to reappear before the court today.
As the jury delivered the verdicts all three women began wailing and shouting in the dock. The sisters hugged each other screaming “not guilty, not guilty” while their mother stood up and shouted abuse, slamming her hands down on the bench, before collapsing on the flooor.
Simon Myerson, QC, for the prosecution, had told the court that the young victim had been brought up in rural Pakistan.
She married her cousin, Shazad Khan, in December 2002, but it was not until three years later that she came to England. She spoke no English when she arrived in Leeds as Khan’s bride, five months before her death in May, 2006.
She was kept a prisoner in a suburban semi-detached house in the Roundhay district of the city and was not allowed out unescorted.
An ambulance crew found her collapsed on the bathroom floor of the house. Her bodily systems had simply given up, the prosecution said.
Mr Myerson said that each of the defendants must have known that she was in pain, and the cause of her suffering, but did nothing to stop it.
Uzma Khan claimed in evidence at her brother’s trial in January last year that the injuries were caused by evil spirits and black magic. Mr Myerson said: “It is not a question of faith. It is a question of evidence. No scientific report has ever stated that evil spirits could have beaten this woman to death. The evil spirit that beat Sabia Rani was Shazad Khan and Uzma knew that.”
A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said that the defendants were among the first people in the country to be convicted of allowing the death of a vulnerable adult. Malcolm Taylor, from the CPS, said: “Sabia Rani was the victim of horrific violence at the hands of her husband while her family chose to do nothing.
“If families or other people with a duty to look after those who need protection deliberately choose not to do so, their neglect will not be ignored by the law enforcement agencies, and prosecution will follow.”

It is certainly true that white women can behave in ab ojectionable way, but it isn't culturally accepted here.
In the Muslim community it is and why should we have to clear up their problems? Tax payer's money is being used to sort out problems that are wholly, entirely the fault of Muslims.
jo, london, uk
plenty of white people kill white women.... nobody says thats becuase white people live by barbaric customs.... nor does it mean that it somehow means that the white killer is refusing to live by british customs.
it simply means the guy had a screw loose. plenty of familes protect abusers. 1 in 5 girls in this coutry are sexually abused abused in some way as childre.... plenty of mothers cover it up etc. again this is nothing to do with custom, nor does it mean white people are barbaric.
Before you guys point fingers at barbaric muslims, I suggest you take a look at how many women are raped, abused and humiliated in the porn industry on a daily basis, for the entertainment viewing pleasure of 80% of your male population. now THAT definitly is barbaric...
MJ, Tokyo,
Justice was served. These women were accessories to murder - ignorance is NOT a defense. This has nothing to so with respect for culture. It is about respect for the laws in the country in which you live. If people are savvy enough to move to the U.K and make a life for themselves (as my parents did), they should take it upon themselves to learn the law and to understand they are not above it.
There is nothing to respect about a culture or person (regardless of country, tribe or religion) that allows the flagrant beating of a vulnerable person until they are dead.
I am happy that justice prevailed in this case and I hope this sends a message to communities in the U.K that allow these atrocities, that the old ways just aren't an option anymore.

To D Case in Newquay - so you are comfortable with horrific abuse towards vulnerable women, just so long as its not in our country? This is not progress.
At least in our country, following these sorts of court decisions, some of these abused women stand a chance of surviving and having justice served. Could they even hope to achieve anything similar in their own country?
How can you educate people in a way of life that will not tolerate such abuse if you (i) deport the offenders back to a country where such abuse is tolerated, or worse (ii) do not allow them to come to this country to experience a different way of living in the first place?
Everyone who lives in the UK is subject our laws and breaking these laws should result in the same punishment as it would be if the offenders were native. The courts have made a brave and just decision and one can only hope that it reverberates around the communities where these barbaric practices occur.
G Morgan, Gsy, UK,
we are constantly being told by the hand wringing, tissue tearing holy than thou's that we must honour and respect the customs of those who have chosen to move to our country !!!
david c, purbeck,
These people should be deported not just jailed and never allowed to return to Britain again. If they want to live by backward customs then they can do so in Pakistan where they will be welcomed. And they say slavery is dead!!
George, Glasgow, UK
How is it we allow people from countries who openly practice barbarity toward women ot come here in the first place?. People from these countries should not, under any circumstances be allowed here. It is terrible that we have whole communities openly living here and carrying out barbaric and cruel acts on defenceless women. They must be thrown out and back to the lawlessness of the countries they come from.
D Case, Newquay,
I cannot accept what this family did and they should go to jail and I hope they do to send a strong message to like minded people - this sort of action/inaction is simply unacceptable.
Accepting cultural differences is all very well but what they did is illegal in this country and they should have respected our laws - if they can , good, if not, - bye !
Tony , Cardiff,
unbeleivable. i don't understand why some cultures still perpetuate the violence on new wives and daughter in laws that they themselves must have experienced in their youth. it's an abomination.
bonnie, johannesburg, s africa
jail them and throw away the key! these backward, violent, women hating communities must get the message that liberal 21st century Britain will not tolerate the worst excesses of their culture and when found out will feel the full force of our laws.
Tony Walker, Warrington, England
"She married her cousin" - Talk about keeping it in the family, it seems the violence was also kept in the family. At last though Justice has finally shown a hand that makes sense. Family violence will still occur and we need to punish all those responsible for it, not just the one who does the beating. Ok so the jail system is full, so why are we jailing people for speeding and other NON criminal crimes when there are serious crimnials out there
marcus saw, horndon on the hill, uk
These people disgust me.
V, Leed,
The cruelty of ordinary people is simply mindblowing.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Hooray, justice finally prevailed. Am I my brother and in this instance sister's keeper. An unequivocable YES.
