LEICESTER A squire who tried to save his family’s reputation by giving police the name of a dead friend after he was caught drink-driving has been jailed for six months for perverting the course of justice.
Richard Coape-Arnold, 61, from Hinckley, Leicestershire, appeared before magistrates under the false name. Minutes after he was fined £125 and banned from driving for 20 months, he was seen driving by the prosecutor in the case and photographed by a local paper.
Leicester Crown Court was told how the “sozzled, silly old man” was caught drink-driving in April. He
told police that he was Michael Bradley and was charged under that name. Graham Buchanan, for Coape-Arnold, said: “He was trying to protect the family name from being dragged through the gutter.”
Judge Ian Collis told him: “It was only when you were seen driving after conviction and your photograph was in the newspaper that it turned out you were not the person named.”
He banned Coape-Arnold from driving for an additional 20 months.

Tony from London, I agree completely.
Farrukh from Surrey I take your point about rapists, in my view they should never leave prison if convicted. But this man got what he deserved, possibly less than that, drunk drivers cause accidents and death every year on our roads.
John, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
Regardless of what sentences rapists receive, this fool deserves everything he got. Too many people are killed and injured by these selfish, moronic individuals who have no sense of responsibility to anyone else
Tony Hall, London, United Kingdom
Amazing, jailed for 6 months? Rapists get less than that and they ruin people's lives literally perverting the course of justice!
Farrukh, Woking, UK
If this were a matter of family name and honour, then why, despite giving false details to protect the family name, did honour not require him to serve the sentence passed by the court? He got straight into his car despite being banned in whatever name. Honour has nothing to do with his actions. This is just another cynical attempt to avoid justice. As for the sentence: If you cant do the time dont do the crime!
