Gemma Adams, 25
The last time Brian Adams saw his daughter, Gemma, in Ipswich town centre he
told her: “You know we love you.” Gemma, a piano-playing chatterbox as a
child who was lost to her family through heroin and prostitution before
Wright killed her, replied: “I love you too.”
Over the last year of her life Gemma had cut herself off from her family.Mr
Adams and his wife, Gail, try to remember their daughter as the “bright and
beautiful” little girl who joined the Brownies and “always cared for other
people”. But they also remember what happened to her and have set up a fund
to raise money to help vulnerable teenagers.
Tania Nicol, 19
Former friends from Chantry High School described Tania as a friendly little
girl. One remembered sitting with her at the back of the class giggling. “I
think we got told off quite a bit,” she said.
After leaving school Tania took several jobs, including working in an hotel
in Ipswich, but friends said that she drifted into drug use soon after
finishing her education. Jim Duell, 60, her father said: “It’s just a horror
story. Tania started off on cannabis. As soon as she started she got lazy
and it developed from there. Then she started taking heroin. We would
question her about it but she was always in denial, always evasive.”
Anneli Alderton, 24
The mother of one was five months pregnant when she was murdered. The night
before she disappeared, she told police that she was working the streets so
that she could get money to buy Christmas presents for her child. She was
described by friends as a “lively, free spirit”, but her mother, Maire, said
that she changed from an “excellent student” to a drug addict after the
death of her father. On December 4 Anneli failed to keep an appointment with
her probation officer, something that she had never done before.
Crucially, her body was found on dry land and clues on it would lead to Wright’s arrest.
Annette Nicholls, 29
“Netty” grew up hoping to be a beautician, obtaining an NVQ and working in a
beauty parlour. She was from a close family who supported her in her
ambition. But three years before her death Annette began using heroin and,
as her cousin remarked, “it changed her almost overnight”. To fund her habit
she turned to prostitution, but was known to be embarrassed about her work
on the streets.
Her body was found in woodland near the village of Levington on December 12
by a police helicopter that had been sent to the scene after the discovery
of the body of Paula Clennell.
Paula Clennell, 24
Paula had a difficult childhood, problems at school and time in an education
referral unit near where her body was found. To fund her habit she worked
the streets around Ipswich Town Football Club each day. One friend said:
“The drugs were the be-all and end-all to her. She would thieve to get the
money. She was known for it. She stole from me. She always said she would
die before the age of 25.”
Paula spoke to police after the disappearance of Ms Adams and Ms Nicol. She
also told a television interviewer that she had become a “bit wary about
getting into cars”.
