Corrupt police officers, politicians and a leading businessman are attempting to discredit the investigation into child abuse at a Jersey care home, the island’s police said today.
Search teams are attempting to break into a second underground chamber at the Haut de la Garenne home where former residents said that they were tortured and sexually abused from the 1960s to 1986.
States of Jersey Police said that at least one of its former officers has made threats against those co-operating with the inquiry. It was also investigating claims that victims were being threatened by former child care staff.
The revelations will strengthen demands for Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, to send independent prosecutors and judges to the island to handle court cases arising from the inquiry.
A spokeswoman for Jersey Police said today: “A small number of police officers have left the force in various circumstances after being accused of activities which could be described as corrupt.
“They, and associates of theirs, including a local businessman and a small number of politicians, have conducted a high profile campaign aimed at discrediting officers involved in their cases.
“This has included sending a large number of letters including a threat to damage the home and vehicle of one of the officers concerned.
“Following the public announcement of this inquiry a politician connected with the child abuse debate was approached by at least one of these former officers and warned not to trust or co-operate with the officers leading the inquiry.”
The spokeswoman said that that no current minister was involved and that the investigation has received the full support of Senator Frank Walker, the Chief Minister, and Wendy Kennard, the Home Affairs Minister.
Jersey Police said that it had been sent letters and e-mails from a number of national newspapers which attempted to smear the leaders of the inquiry. The author was a sister of one of the associates of the former officers.
“We would emphasise that there is at present no evidence to suggest that these officers were involved in any so called ‘cover up’ of former offences of the type being investigated,” said the spokeswoman.
“The focus of the inquiry team remains the detection of people who have committed offences against children and we will not be deflected from this.

I pray the investigators have the integrity and strength to expose the awful stain on this community, that the abused may find healing in finally being given voice; that the perpetrators and all involved in the cover-up are made to account for their actions, regardless of who they are - it's time.

I'm curious as to know how many children was placed at the jersey childrens home that was residents of jersey, and how many were children from our shores.
Most files of kids that was in care in the 70s to late 80s was lost or destroyed by fire. As sir Ronald Waterhouse stated in his report. Many people who were placed at childrens homes as kids could not be traced. So it is very hard to assess who was where, when and what happend to them.
Whilst a nation seems transfixed to the events in jersey please remember that if investigations are now being conducted over here in regards to staff, have they had accsess to any more kids? If so in what capacity.
Whilst perpertrators under go expensive offenders treatments there is very little availible for victims of abuse.
Food for thought, the NSPCC is a life line to some kids in care, statistics show most calls from children in care refer to them selves being abused by staff or other residents. They recognise that they are the most vunerable

i beg the police, has a man whos life wasruined by abuse, dont let the memory of those children who suffered in this hell be side tracked by those who are more concerned about image and how jersey is seen in the world, I wil ltell you how it is seen, has a haven for child abuse ,whats worse the abuse was covered up, the truth wil lcome out now, and you who abused and hid the abusers will pay for your crimes. what happened to these children in a so called home for the vunrable is evil. I find it hard to belive in god, but there has to be something better than humanity. if this is what its about. and if there is a god, he promised this" those who hurt children , better they where never born" lets hope he is right.

Lenny Harper has had a number of well publicised run-ins with ex-coppers (who he sacked) and one businessman. If it is that businessman, he is hardly what I would call "leading". As usual with this story, please wait for the full facts to emerge.
So, no bent coppers or dodgy dealers where you live eh? No, that never happens on the mainland.
As regards Philip Smith's Nazi slur, he'll find that Churchill abandoned the islands to the Nazis. The inhabitants had no weapons and resisted as much as they could without being shot. Low level resistance if you like.
I think i shall call my father-in-law who spent the 5 years of German occupation as an emaciated schoolboy making soup out of grass, to ask him if he collaborated. Have some respect .
John, Jersey,
Well if this is the case sack them all and start again or just halt all proceedings in Jersey and send a one man or woman representative from the mainland to run the show !!!
Ian Payne, WALSALL,
I would like to see the stats on the percentages of people who came out of their homes to attend this meeting of people who actually care about the children involved in the horrific events now known to have happened on their island. Like if you compared the 3% of Jerseys population to that of Great Britain 3% that would be bigger then the 2 ,000,000 who went to march against an illegal war.

The normal reaction of people to child abuse allegations is to distance themselves rightly or wrong from the accused. There is a deeply suspicious amount of background work being done to stop this investigation by the established people and network in Jersey. The question is Who and Why. Although I suspect it is obviously to protect their own interests which provides further proof.
John, Highlands, Scotland
not suprised about jersey cabal.
complicity allegations during the nazi occupation have never been investigated.
do we need these islands? give them to the french might be a very good idea.

It seems to me that there are a large number of very influential people here who are up to this in their neck. And they're starting to panic.

I rather think it is time Jack Straw stepped in and had a look about how the States of Jersey operates. It is like an out of control borough council in size that has full legislative and executive powers on a par with a national parliament. It is evident that the way that this enquiry is being allegedly undermined by parts of the Jersey establishment that it is not competent to exercise the powers it has.
Ashley, Plymouth, UK
It stinks of institutional abuse of children with the collusion of the then police. What a sorry state of affairs for these poor children with nowhere to go to complain about the pedophiles who abused with impunity and without restraint. Sounds like the entire establishment was either involved or turned a blind eye.
D Case, Newquay,
The public must have confidence that the investigation into 'The Jersey Child Abuse Scandal' is being enabled to be carried out with independence and without interference from threats form those who have a vested interest in trying to sweep anything under the carpet.
Those who want to come forward and expose the alleged abuse they suffered as children and those who reported any concerns regarding the treatment of the children, during all the years, must have confidence that anything they report now is listened to in INDEPENDENCE.
Those who claim to be victims and witnesses will have learned to distrust the established child protection authorities and organisations.
It is impossible, at this stage to know which bodies, in Jersey, or elsewhere, were contacted regarding the abuse of the children, over the years.
The helpline for the victims and witnesses, who want to come forward now must be seen to be INDEPENDENT from any established child protection agencies.
