Shannon Matthews, 9
The child, who is said to be quiet, shy and timid had told school friends that she was considering running away in the days before she disappeared.
Her natural father Leon Rose lived 10 miles away, but it has been reported that she saw her mother’s partner Craig Meehan as her father.
Shannon’s brothers and sisters
Tony, 11, Shannon, nine, Cameron, five, and Courtney, two, all live with her. Her three other siblings Ian, 10, Kelly, six and Daniel, seven, live with their respective fathers.
Karen Matthews, 32
Shannon’s mother has seven children by five different fathers, four of them live with her and her partner Craig Meehan in Moorside Road, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury.
Mrs Matthews said this week that she thought somebody that knew her may have taken Shannon in order to hurt her.
She said: "I think somebody out there who knows Shannon and who probably knows me as well. It makes me think I can't trust people who are really close to me any more."
Craig Meehan, 22
It has been reported that Shannon was found in the flat of one of Mr Meehan’s relatives.
The supermarket fishmonger lived with Karen Matthews on Moorside Road he had denied suggestions by her parents and brother that he had ever hit Shannon.
Mr Meehan said that he had taken no notice of the fingers being pointed towards him and insisted that police activity surrounding the family was routine.
Karen Matthews vehemently defended her partner in a GMTV interview and her support was backed up by Leon Rose, Shannon’s natural father.
Mr Rose said: "I've always thought he was a decent guy. . . It was obvious [Shannon] looked up to him. If she's got time for him then so have I."
Leon Rose, 29
Shannon’s father is separated from Karen Matthews. He is unemployed and lives with his partner Tracey Matthews, 35, in the countryside outside Huddersfield 10 miles from Shannon’s Dewsbury home.
Gordon, 66 and June, 64, Matthews
Karen Matthews' parents raised Shannon for the first few months of her life. June called the schoolgirl “my little Miss Smiley-Face”.
Shannon's grandparents alleged in a Sunday newspaper interview that Craig Meehan had hit the children and that Shannon was scared of him.
Martin Matthews, 42
Karen’s Matthew’s brother lives round the corner from Shannon and her family in Dewsbury. Shannon regularly visited him and she was friends with his daughter Tyler, 10.
He claimed Shannon had not wanted to return home because she had fallen out with Mr Meehan, who had grounded her.
Mr Matthews said: "She's been around here on many occasions saying the same thing: crying, saying she doesn't want to go home, saying 'I hate living there'. She's showed me bruises on her arms and said Craig had lashed out at her. He does lash out."
Neil Hyett, 35 and Amanda Hyett, 25
Amanda Hyett is Craig Meehan's sister, the couple live next door to Karen Matthews and her family on Moorside Road. During the hunt for Shannon police searched their home and garden.
Mrs Hyett said today: "I can't believe it - what an incredible relief."

This depressing story is symptomatic of the poor parenting skills endemic in our society, the natural consequence of educated people not having children due to fears of costs of 'safe' schooling (and where both parents feel obliged to work full-time resulting in less parental-child interaction), while an uneducated underclass are encouraged to have more children by a social services system which rewards irresponsibility. If more money were put into a rigorous state education system and less into the tentacles of the social security system (which should be a safety net as originally designed by Aneurin Bevan, not a lifestyle) then perhaps this gross imbalance could be addressed. People would be shocked if they knew how much the government spends on Disbility Living Allowance (the new 'long-term unemployment' benefit) compared to the per capita spend on children's schooling. Harsh but true...

No one knows what goes off behind closed doors, and it amuses me that people on here automatically think just because shannon mathews is in foster care that her parents are not looking after her. It is a voluntary agreement between mother and social services. Lets face it, it could all have something to do with the press being camped outside the family home day and night and until media intrest dies down, it just may not be safe for her to return home. At least with foster carers it could be easier for shannon to slip into a world of "normality" until this whole episode dies down and this poor little girl can come home to her family and start to put her life back in order. She is not a star, she is just a little girl but when she comes home, and the press find out she will be hounded til they get that precious shot of her at home. If i was her mother, i would agree too for her to be foster care until this all calms down and i could start to bring some sort of normailty back for her.

What ever the outcome now shannon has been found safe, will have to be in her best interest, which means placing her in a home/environment where she will have the love and security to keep her safe , This means responsible adults that will protect her safety against anything or anyone
LD, MIRFIELD, ENGLAND
I am so happy that Shannon has been found safe and well. However I am sure that I am not the only person to find the whole event most peculiar and questionable. Shannon is now in the right place with foster parents. I also think that the future enquiries that are to be made by the police and social services focus on the enviromental and physical /psychological well being of Shannons other siblings. I wish Shannon all the luck in the world for her future and pray she finds security and love, wish all children deserve.

craig meehan is only a child himself, i could see that just by observing his body language. What stability and parenting skills can he provide for shannon. Maybe Karen should stop mothering him and direct any skills and time to her children.
At present Shannon would be better with a stable family, while mum and boyfriend learn to be parents.
linda thompson, leeds, uk
thank god shannon has been found safe and well, i dont know her or her family but from what i can gather, i think the best place for her is to be put with a caring loving family. if anything comes out that she was knowingly taken by some one th family know then they should be made to repay for all the time and money spent on trying to find her. something just doesent seem right.its great that shannon is back and i hope she will make a full recoverey from this terrible ordeal.
cath barry, bradford, uk
This child should be taken in to care of foster parents. The child needs stability in her life and it seems to me that she would not know her social boundaries in this mess of a family.
Social Care would be an opportunity for other authorities to make sense of what is happening in her life. Shannon deserves the best possible start in life and now is the time to help her.

children are not safe anywhere in this day and must be kept i eye on at all times
maryfrances, kirkbyliverpool,
shannon obviously should be kept away until intense investigations into this family are complete. Maybe some people are different but i know for a fact if it was my daughter missing , noone would be trusted until proved innocent, and if found alive, id be so ecstatic not just wink at my friend, if what itv news said today was her reaction then id be questioning is that a normal reaction, or the reaction of someone thats covering up for there partner - maybe that is jumping to conclusions but how many others think the same. The point is now to make sure Shannon stays safe !
debbie hodlin, pontefract,
some good news for everybody.good look to shannon and every body concerned for her future .
