A mother whose daughter was killed because she was dressed as a Goth made a plea yesterday for teenagers to show more compassion to each other after a 15-year-old boy was found guilty of stamping Sophie Lancaster to death, writes Russell Jenkins.
Miss Lancaster, 20, a distinctive figure in multi-coloured dreadlocks, facial piercings and dark clothes, was set upon as she begged a gang of drunken youths to stop beating her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, 21, in a savage and unprovoked attack.
The five-strong gang acted “like a pack of wild animals” as they first kicked and stamped Mr Maltby, an arts student, also dressed as a Goth, late on a Friday night last August in a skate park in Bacup, Lancashire. As Miss Lancaster was kneeling down cradling her boyfriend’s head several of the gang turned on her.
Brendan Harris, 15, of Bacup, was found guilty of her murder at the end of a two-week trial at Preston Crown Court. A second youth, Ryan Herbert, 16, has already pleaded guilty to the charge. Three other teenagers have admitted causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Maltby.
After the trial the murdered woman’s mother, Sylvia Lancaster, 52, a social worker who helps troubled young people, said that she had set up a charity in her daughter’s name to raise money for workshops and youth clubs.
She said: “If we are to make any sense of Sophie’s death perhaps we should see it as an opportunity to examine how all of us, particularly younger people, can become blinkered. I believe today, more than ever, we need to show respect, compassion and tolerance for those whose appearance and culture differs from our own.”
Miss Lancaster was sharing a flat in Bacup with Mr Maltby when they walked into Stubbylee Park on their way home from a night out at a friend’s house and struck up a conversation with the youths that ended with their being attacked. Miss Lancaster remained in a coma in Hope Hospital, Salford, for almost two weeks. She died on the day that Mr Maltby was allowed to go home. He still has no memory of the attack.
Harris, who threw the first punch at Mr Maltby, admitted that he had drunk two litres of cider, a bottle of Stella Artois lager and swigged from a bottle of pear schnapps.
Michael Shorrock, QC, for the prosecution, had told the jury: “These five teenagers, acting like a pack of wild animals, savagely and mercilessly attacked and beat unconscious, first Robert Maltby and then, as she tried to rescue and help him, his girlfriend.
“This defendant, together with another young man, attacked her and beat her into unconsciousness. It would appear that Mr Maltby and Miss Lancaster were singled out not for anything they had said or done but because they dressed differently.”
Detectives were highly critical of the boys’ parents, who appeared to have no control over them and allowed them to be drunk outside the house so late at night. They were also dismayed when Herbert’s mother was seen laughing and joking with her son while he was in custody.
Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell said: “There was almost a total lack of parental responsibility. I am very critical of some of the parents involved. I really do not think they have taken completely seriously how repulsive this incident was.”

It seems as though the youth of a lot of countries are out of control in a multitude of ways. First there are the ones who do not have any parental control or if there is some, it is totally ignored by the youth. Then you have all the single women who are raising children, both male and female, without having a father figure in the picture. After all this, you have laws that have been passed by various governments prohibiting corporal punishiment, i.e., spankings. You cannot get a child to listen all the time with just words. There must be some sort of punishment even it it is taking away some privilage such as television. It will not hurt a small child to have a "pop" on the leg if they misbehave. They will get the message fast. As to violent crimes, a life sentence should be just that, LIFE in prison. Once word gets out that prison will be life for violent crimes, then that should help the problem. Otherwise, having swinging doors of prisons will do no good.

This was a disgusting, brutal attack, and I honestly feel that these scumbags do not deserve their lives. Harris's mother's attitude by all accounts has been appalling and rightly, she has been slammed. However, I ask you whether or not you genuinely believe that Herbert's mother is deserving of being slammed in the press? There are no accounts of her having been anything like Harris's mother after all. It is all very well condemning her to having not looked after her children properly, but when someone does something as twisted as this, who could control them? Certainly not a single mother of three.
Joe Beveridge, Bury,
When will yobbish and violent behaviour be taken seriously in this country?
Why doesn't a 'life sentence' mean just that?
Where is the deterrent?
It would appear that the honest, good people in this country have no human right to protection from these evil thugs, who everyone seems to want to cushion and protect, with their excuses of poor, unhappy childhoods, ignorant, bad parents, and well, they had been on drink and/or drugs - what can you expect?
OK - so let's bring back controlled drinking in pubs, instead of 24 hour drinking!
Let's stop drugs on the streets - everyone on these estates knows who sells - how can the community police not know? Is it easier to ignore these petty crimes? Is it a way of saving money for more 'important' issues - if so, what are they?
What's more important than our children's future? Shouldn't we be educating children in school on how to bring up their children?

It is time for a policy of "zero tolerance". The softly softly approach clearly does not work. National service and borstals where there are no electronic games, televisions or adventure holidays should be the punishment for boys like these.
Some would say that "punishment" is not the way to go but to find out why they acted the way they did. I say they know why they did it - for their idea of fun! They need to be punished, and their parents re-educated.
These boys probably have never had the word "no" said to them and meant. They have never been taught respect for others and their belongings.
I am the mother of girls and boys, the youngest still a teenager. I am fortunate that my children turned out well, not by chance, but by hard work from my husband and I teaching them right from wrong and respect. They never knew cruelty ever, just love, guidance, and a good home life. We are not saints just ordinary people who put their kids first and were there for them.
Lesley, BANGOR, CO. DOWN,
This is the risk we run when legitimise intolerance - of the fat, the thin, drinkers, smokers. The anti-smoking "charity" ASH call it "denormalisation". The problem is, some people don't stop at dirty looks.

no wonder vigilatism is on the increrase. I hope the scummy parents are punished as much as mch as there sons are (hopefully) over the years.....
You only have to see the swaggering louts answering there bail conditions at a police stations to feel your blood boil....

Its been argued back and forth but we really do need a more drastic punishment system. Not rehab but punishment. If it has to be capital punishment then so be it.
Pat Doran, Carne,Wexford, Rep of Ireland
Hardest of all is to know that these scum and their scummy parents have no comprehension as to the gravity of the crime. To them, it is a badge of credibility to be worn with pride: they should not be allowed to do so.
Prison will not make any impact upon them in which, it is hoped, a feeble spark of conscience will ignite in them something resembling remorse and understanding of what they have done. These are sociopaths bred from a sociopathic genetic chain; even the parents thought it all to be quite humorous, and something to gain laughable entertainment from...they ARE as much to blame! Their only contribution to society was to breed and spew out toxic slimes whom went on to murder a girl before they are out of their teens. What point does the prison sentence make to them?
Every single member of that gang, that awful night, is a killer by complicitness, and should be behind bars. The parents of each gang participant should be sentenced to undergo social citizenship understanding.
Glenn, Blackburn, Lancashire
And to think that I, as a taxpayer, have no doubt financially brought these stinking people up.
Is it any wonder that these people think that they can do what they like to who they like when they get every basic human need taken care of without the consequence of hard work?
I have socialist values but something really needs to be done to these people (and i'm not thinking nice holidays!) to stop them destroying our society.
Kim, London,
There is only a few hours left, can I please ask anyone reading to consider singing this petition to see attacks on people because of how they are dressed categorised as a hate crime.

How about charging the parents as accessories to murder, for that is what they are. Those children were out after midnight, drunk and out of control, with parents who not only allowed this behaviour but condoned it. No doubt they will say that their sons were only "expessing" themselves.
Poor parenting skills are to blame for so much of this increase in drinking and violence - now is the time for our Government to make parents responsible for the actions of their children before this tragedy happens again.
Helen Henderson, Stafford,
The murderer of Sophie Lancaster has forfeited the right to live himself - he does not value life or respect life. I am fast becoming a great believer in capital punishment being allowed by judges in certain cases and to hell with being under age - if Brendan Harris was my son I would welcome a severe punishment. His parents are as much to blame - they have no decency. I would rather come face to face with a pack of wolves because at least they only kill for food not fun. Democracy in this country has gone too far - hit these mad thugs where it hurts - send them off to army camps to learn discipline because obvioulsly their parents couldn't be bothered.
Pat Rennix, Belfast, Northern Ireland
When is our legal system going to promote parental responsibility? When will irresponsible parents like the Harrises and Heberts be made to pay for their indolence? These people have no shame and there is no consequence to them for their appalling behavoir and the bestial spawn that they unlease on society. I wonder how pathetic the sentences will be?
Peter, Hermitage, UK
There is only one fitting punishment for crimes of this nature. A mad animal is put down.
Eric, Bristol, UK
The parents of the children involved should be persued by the law for failing to control them.
Michael , Leighton Buzzard, UK
Although this incident is incredibly sad & awful, I can't say I'm surprised. I dress "alternatively" and have been viciously attacked twice for no reason & often have abuse screamed at me in the street, usually by children no older than 18, who are often visibly drunk or stoned. Most 'Chavs' pride themselves on their ignorance, intolerance, and inane acts of agression & are encouraged by their parents and friends to act this way.
I agree that the perpetrators should be put away for LIFE (by which I mean imprisoned until they die, not given parole after a few years) because people who think it's justifiable to take another human life based on their victims appearance don't deserve to walk free.
Alex, Leicester, UK
I give you my view of what is a fitting sentence for the brutal and deliberate murder of, Sophie Lancaster. How about a nice round figure, of one hundred years. Much better and more ruthless than any death sentence. That young girl has gone forever. The killer should be seperated from society for the rest of "his" life.
Tony Cox (Mr), Liverpool,
