Waheed Zaman stared fixedly into the camera lens and told anyone who might one day watch his “martyrdom video” that he had not been brainwashed. Dressed in a black shirt, wearing a Palestinian-style scarf tied around his forehead and sitting in front of a black flag bearing Arabic script, he declared that he knew exactly what he was doing.
“I have not been brainwashed, I am educated to a very high standard. I am old enough to make my own decision,” Mr Zaman, who studied biomedical science, said.
Then the former president of the Islamic Society at London Metropolitan University warned the Western world that death and destruction would sweep through it like a tornado.
He said: “You will not feel any peace or security in your lands until you stop interfering in our lands . . . As you kill us you will be killed. As you bomb us you will be bombed.”
Extracts from the film of Mr Zaman were among seven alleged martyrdom videos played or read to a jury at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday. The videos were found by police in August 2006 after the arrests of Mr Zaman and seven other men who are on trial accused of plotting to carry out suicide attacks on transatlantic airliners.
The videos are believed to have been made in a flat in Walthamstow, northeast London.
Umar Islam, 29, a convert to Islam who was born Brian Young, spoke in his video of his hatred for the decadence of the West. Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 27, declared his happiness at being chosen to lead the terrorist attack on the airliners. Ibrahim Savant, 27, delighted in the “beautiful operation” that would end with his death and that of hundreds of others.
Tanvir Hussain, 26, was filmed saying that he wished he could be a martyr over and over again until the West had been taught its lesson. Arafat Khan, 26, – who made two recordings – talked of “floods of martyrdom operations”.
Peter Wright, QC, for the prosecution, said that the videos were all of the same tenor and tension. Clips played to the court showed the defendants jabbing their fingers as they spoke of causing violence and death in the same breath as claiming to have been chosen by Allah. “They were delivered by men similarly dressed, similarly minded, similarly committed,” Mr Wright said. “They were each delivered against the backdrop of the same black flag and they each contained the same chilling sentiment.”
The films were found in an unedited state, and in a number of them someone off-camera asks the men how they feel about claiming innocent lives. Each replies that no one in the West is innocent as long as its armies are in Muslim countries.
Mr Wright referred to the use of the phrase “the media brothers” and said that this might refer to the people who would edit the videos for release to the media and on the internet after the attacks.
In his videoclip, Mr Islam said: “We will not leave this path until you leave our lands, until you feel what we are feeling. This is revenge for the actions of the USA in the Muslim lands and their accomplices such as the British and the Jews.”
Later he added: “Even if you disagree that you’ve done nothing, you’re just sitting there and you’re still funding the army. You haven’t put down your leader. Most of you [are] too busy, you know, watching Home and Away and EastEnders, complaining about the World Cup, drinking your alcohol, to even care [about] anything. That’s all you seem to care about, and I know because I’ve come from that.”
In another clip, Mr Ali said: “I’m doing this . . . to punish and to humiliate the kuffar [unbeliever], to teach them a lesson that they will never forget. It’s to tell them that we Muslim people have pride, our people of Allah, the people of Islam, we are brave. We are not cowards. Enough is enough.”
He added: “Sheikh Osama [bin Laden] warned you many times to leave our lands or you will be destroyed and now the time has come for you to be destroyed.”
In the clip of Mr Savant he said: “All Muslims take heed, remove yourself from the grasp of the kuffar before you are counted as one of them. Do not be content with your council houses and businesses and Western lifestyle.”
In a clip of Mr Khan he said: “We will rain upon you such a terror and destruction that you will never feel peace and security. There will be floods of martyrdom operations and bombs falling through your lands. There will be daily torment in this world.”
Explosive tests
— A liquid bomb made to the same blueprint being discussed by the alleged airline bombers was tested by explosives experts and cracked the security glass in the protective chamber where it was detonated
— Film of the test explosion was shown to the jury at Woolwich Crown Court. The first take, recorded by a mini-camera in the chamber, ended instantly when the explosion destroyed the camera
— A second camera showed the force of the blast and huge cracks in the thickened glass in front of the lens. Cameras in other positions recorded blast screens being sent flying by the explosion
— The device constructed by forensic explosive experts consisted of 500 ml of hydrogen peroxide-based liquid in a softdrink bottle. It was set off by a detonator containing HMTD primary explosive
