Pete Doherty was finally sent to prison today for repeatedly breaching a probation order requiring him to stop taking drugs and attend rehab sessions.
The troubled Babyshambles frontman, 29, had been given a suspended prison sentence in October last year for possession of drugs and driving illegally.
His supervision order required him to visit court frequently to give progress reports as well take part in a rehabilitation programme.
However, at West London Magistrates Court in Ealing, Judge Davinder Lachar heard that Doherty had repeatedly failed to attend the required sessions.
A spokesperson for the court said that Doherty had been jailed for "breach of time keeping, non-compliance of his order and using different drugs".
After being sentenced to 14 weeks in prison, Doherty was handcuffed and left in a prison van. His sentence menns he has been forced to postpone a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, scheduled for April 26.
A statement from the singer’s record company, Parlophone Records, said: "Today, Peter Doherty was sentenced to a total of 14 weeks in jail for being in breach of his probation order.
"Unfortunately Peter has had to postpone his show at the Royal Albert Hall on April 26. The show is due to be rescheduled and all tickets will be valid for the new date once it has been announced.
"Peter was very much looking forward to the show and would like to offer his sincerest apologies to all his fans and to all those concerned."
The prison sentence is the latest in a series of legal scrapes which Doherty has been involved in, almost all of which relate to drugs, and many of which had seen him narrowly escape prison over the last few years.
Most recently, in October last year, Doherty was given a suspended jail sentence by West London magistrates for possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis, and motoring offences. The four-month custodial sentence handed down by the judge was suspended for two years.
In addition, he was also handed an 18-month supervision order and a 12-month drug rehabilitation order.
Last December, Amy Winehouse's father branded the singer a "scumbag" after spotting his daughter out on the town with him.
Mitch Winehouse reportedly attacked Doherty with a guitar after spotting his daughter and the rocker backstage.
He told the Grazia magazine that Doherty's use of drugs meant he was a bad influence on Winehouse, who herself has highly-publicised problems with drink and drugs.
A spokesman for Doherty today said that he was looking into grounds for appeal.

Pete Doherty is an amazing poet and is extremly talented.
You people who have commented here saying "good" ect must, I am sorry to say, be alot more open minded.
It's people like that who should be ashamed they have got tricked into thinking he is a "druggie scumbag" or whatever you suggest he is. The press make life even worse for him, because he refuses to tell them about his personal life. Which is understandable. It has nothing to do with them!
And also, so what if he takes drugs. So many people idolise celebs and rockstars that take drugs, that has no effect on them, they don't think "Oh Pete takes drugs, I am going to take drugs now in order to support him"
Get over it, he takes drugs.
Tasha, Bargoed, Wales
Good.
Why he's a person who has so much celebrity I'll never understand.
He's taken the pss out of the law, many many times, no one else would be given as many breaks.
Sadly, jail wont help his drug addictions, like all addicts, I hope he can overcome his drug problems.
Craig, whitley, uk
He'll be out in 48hrs you wait and see, any "normal" person would've been locked up years ago.
Pamela, surrey,
So what if a rock singer takes drugs? He is not the first to do so, and certainly will not be the last. Indeed, a number of knighted rock stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Mick Jagger and Sir Elton John have all taken many drugs in the past. I think it's outrageous that tax payers money will be wasted sending Pete Doherty to prison where apparently availability of illegal drugs is even greater than in the outside world. The judge who sent him down must live the dark ages. No wonder people have so little respect for the judiciary in this country.

i think this guy got a terriable problem with being his own worst enemy. i don't think the papers covering his private life helps at all i imagion it adds to his problems. as i am now.
i also think people should look at their own lives and stop judging what they don't understand. addictions or any kind cause people problems it just depends on the personality and the sitution as to how they turn out.

Actually, Mitch met Peter and saw that he was actually decent. Don't believe everything you read..
All the best Peter...
Whats th point of sending him to prison where he can get access to drugs on the ready? Its about strapping him into rehab thats it.
bob, london,
Fantastic!
Michael Buble, Vancouver,
What earthly use does it do to jail him? He is not dealing to kids or robbing to pay for his habit and left alone he will probably kill himself or clean up his act, yet now I have to pay to keep him in jail to make the politicians seem like they know what they are doing, I would rather jail a politician. You know it makes sense.
