The moments two of the London suicide bombers blew themselves up were screened
in public for the first time yesterday before a conspiracy trial jury.
A blinding flash and cloud of dust mark the moment when a packed rush-hour
Tube was ripped apart causing the death of seven passengers between
Liverpool Street and Aldgate stations on July 7, 2005.
Moments earlier the CCTV footage showed commuters hurrying on to the eastbound
Circle Line train where Shezhad Tanweer was already waiting to detonate his
bomb. Thirty seconds later a bright flash of light is seen in the tunnel.
This is quickly followed by clouds of dust that obscure the camera’s view.
As the dust clears, people waiting on the platform look around in confusion
and then begin running to the exits. Two police officers approach the tunnel
before stopping and turning back.
Kingston Crown Court was then shown a picture of the mangled wreckage of the
train. The doors and windows had been blown off and the interior was charred
and blackened.
The chilling footage was shown during the start of the trial of Waheed Ali,
Sadeer Saleem and Mohammed Shakil. Relatives of the 52 innocent people
killed in the attacks and some of the survivors watched from the public
gallery and a special annexe as the footage was played. The three defendants
stared intently at a screen outside the dock as the silent images recorded
the day when four of their friends had set out for London.
It started at 4am with pictures of Mohammed Sidique Khan, Shezhad Tanweer and
Hasib Hussain driving from Leeds. Jermaine Lindsay, the fourth bomber, is
seen arriving at Luton railway station in his burgundy Fiat Brava from his
home in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. The other three bombers arrive and park
beside his car.
Colour footage shows the four passing through the barriers at Luton station
each carrying a bulky back-pack. The camera tracks them on the platform
before they board the train to London at 7.25am. An hour later comes the
last sighting of the four together as they arrive at King’s Cross
Thameslink. The jury was told that 25 minutes later the first of the four
bombs went off at Edgware Road underground station, detonated by Khan.
Pictures show the wrecked carriage where six passengers died.
In Russell Square, where 26 people died when Lindsay detonated his bomb,
little of one side of the train remained. Finally the jury watched Hussain
who, the prosecution said, appeared to have suffered a technical hitch with
his bomb. He was seen buying an item, said to be a battery, from WH Smith in
King’s Cross station.
Wearing sunglasses, he leaves the station and briefly visits a McDonald’s.
Minutes later cameras from the British Medical Association in Tavistock
Square show a number 30 bus shortly before Hussain detonates his bomb on the
upper desk. Pictures from a bus just ahead show panicking passengers
struggling to get off as they see the vehicle behind them explode.
