The son of an NHS consultant will face a fourth day of questioning about possible links to Muslim extremists after police allegedly discovered explosives at his Bristol home.
Andrew Ibrahim, 19, is believed to have shunned his Western lifestyle in recent months and adopted a radical interpretation of Islam after the break-up of his parents’ marriage and his completion of a drugs programme.
By the time of his arrest on Thursday under the Terrorism Act he was wearing traditional Arab dress and had a large beard. Police carried out a series of controlled detonations of material found in his home.
It is understood that Mr Ibrahim was arrested after an informant contacted police. He had not previously been under investigation by either antiterrorist detectives or MI5.
A photograph taken two years ago shows Mr Ibrahim with pink spiky hair and piercings in his ears, right eyebrow and chin. His entry on the MySpace website says that he enjoys DJing, “hardcore, techno, trance”, music and singing in a band.
Mr Ibrahim is reported to have lived in a hostel for the homeless and completed a drugs treatment order before moving in February to the house in Westbury-on-Trym. He is believed to have enrolled recently on a course at the University of the West of England.
His father, Nassif Ibrahim, 60, is a consultant pathologist at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, and his mother, Victoria, comes from West Yorkshire. The couple are reported to have separated last year.
