A former Scotland Yard detective was charged with perverting the course of justice in relation to the murder of a man whose death he investigated 21 years ago. Sid Fillery, 61, a detective sergeant for more than 20 years, was one of five men arrested earlier this week in connection with the killing of Daniel Morgan in 1987.

Mr Morgan, 37, a private investigator, was found in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, South London, with an axe embedded in his head. It is believed he was killed because he was about to expose links between corrupt police and a crime network. After retiring, Mr Fillery took over the dead man’s post as co-director of Southern Investigations.

A police spokesman said that James Cook, 53, and Garry Vian, 47, have been charged with Mr Morgan’s murder. Another two men are in custody being questioned. They are Mr Morgan’s former business partner Jonathon Rees, 53, and Mr Vian’s brother Glenn, 49.
