Members of the public want community support officers (CSOs) to be replaced by police officers, results from a Police Federation poll showed.
The results were published as Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary, prepares to speak at the annual conference of the federation on Wednesday in front of 1,000 delegates who are still angry about the decision by the Government to postpone their pay rise.
The YouGov survey of 2,100 adults, commissioned by the constables’ central committee of the federation, showed that 70 per cent of respondents would feel safer if there were more police officers instead of CSOs. When they were told that police officers start on £21,000 a year, compared with £16,000 for a community support officer, 57 per cent said police officers provided better value for money.
Only 8 per cent said that they would feel safer with more CSOs at the expense of a cut in police numbers.
Julie Nesbit, the committee chairman, said: “These findings clearly demonstrate that the public feel safer with police officers patrolling our streets and not civilian staff. The constables’ central committee warned the Government when CSOs were introduced that trying to police on the cheap was shortsighted.”
The Police Federation has opposed the use of CSOs since they were introduced by the former home secretary David Blunkett in 2003.

PCSO's have had a great impact on my local community....Kids arent out on the streets at night, the off road bikes arent outside my house at all hours and now more than once a year I see one on the beat. Look at the positive impact of these officers and stop bad mouthing everything they do.

At least 'Community Support Officers' are out there, and often are the only uniform the general public see. The federation (in general) have never accepted CSO,S and feel threatened by them. How about a real survey-independant, not commissioned by a body thats views are somewhat biased!

We want the unsworn civilians INSIDE the station doing the administrative support with the real police with the real powers on the streets, not the other way round.

PSCO's are about as much use as ASBO's and Chocolate fire guards. If civilians are to be employed in the police force let them do the vast amounts of paper work currently done by proper coppers and get the said coppers out on the beat were they should be.
FEF, Tewkesbury,
Neither police nor 'hobby bobbies' are of any use apart from for collecting taxes. All that pay and so little commitment.

If Jacqui Smith feels the need to save money on policing let her withdraw the police that are wasting their time guarding politicians. Then the politicians can start finding out what the public really think of them.
Chris, Derby,
Poor Jacqui Smith.
Britain needs a competent Home Secretary.
Foreigners must think that Britain is a joke.
We have the most useless female politicians in the world.
Ruth Kelly, Harriet Harman and Jacqui Smith are Blair's creations.
We need competent ministers, gender is immaterial.

However limited the powers of PCSO's are, at least here near Reading they are a friendy face that you can speak with about things. I would much rather speak with one of them rather than the aloof "real" policemen who mostly seem to potter about in cars looking down their noses at everyone.

Blunkett's bobby's. Just like him, useless.
Roger, Surrey,
Thats a surprise..pcso's , no powers and a complete waste of time, effort and money

Don't worry everyone. Jacqui Smith will be seeking new employment within the year (if she's not doing so already).
If she's lucky she'll get the minimum wage.
