London Dog fighting has soared in popularity as youths use powerful dogs to assert their status. The RSPCA will tell a conference today that telephone calls about dog fighting have trebled in a year. There were 358 specific calls last year, compared with 137 in 2006.
More than a third of calls were complaints about youths who forced their dogs to fight in streets and parks.
The trend is confirmed in London by the number of dogs seized by the Metropolitan Police under the Dangerous Dogs Act. On average, 38 dogs were seized every year between 2003 and 2006, but between May 2006 and April 2007 this figure grew to 173. In the past year to the end of April, it leapt to 480, of which 80 per cent were pitbull-type breeds.
Dog fighting was banned in Britain in 1835, but it has returned intermittently. RSPCA officials believe that many youths feel owning a powerful dog can boost their reputation within a gang. Some gangs use dogs instead of knives and guns to defend their territory.

I don't understand; people want to always blame pit bulls; most people can't tell what is a pit bull and what is not which feeds into the "vicious" pit bull stereotype. What is a pit bull-type breed? There is no such thing. Either it's a pit bull or not. Some are mixed and if so call it a mixed.

I would just like to say that in order for us to help put an end to this we need to raise awareness and send letters to papers, the authority etc and say that there should be tougher penalities on those who participate in Dog Fighting. 15yrs in prison MINIMUM. Its cruel, premeditated and sick.
Kelly Devane, Perton, Wolverhampton, UK.
Put the dog owners up against one of their dogs and see how they like it.It disgusts me that animals are treated this way. Those people that promote dog fighting deserve nothing but contempt.

We need dog licences, priced high enough to make them prohibitive to the types of people that are buying these status dogs at the moment.
There should be a registered owner who must be over 18 and able to prove they have the time, money and knowledge to be able to take care of the breed.

This has been on the rise dramatically for years in Bradford between gangs of young Asian men. Nowadays I literally see at least one young man walking one of these so-called 'fighting dogs' every day - compared to hardly at all 5 or 6 years ago.
It disgusts me and something should be done.
Andy, Ilkley, UK
Breed bans do not work but only seek to punish responsible owners of those perceived 'dangerous' dogs. There has not been any evidence to prove that one breed is any more dangerous than another, but reports show that any dog in the hands of irresponsible dog owners can be aggressive. Ban bad owners!

It is time that the police clamped down on youths who go out with dogs UNmuzzled thinking that they are above the law. WHEN are the police going to actually enforce the law ?.
Kevin, Woking, Surrey
the reports all seen, show the staffordshire bull terrior as being a dangerous breed, however i have one of those dogs since i was born, and he is anything but agressive. he is exciteable but not agressive, and this is because we have not encouraged him to be agressive. it is totally an owners fault

I look forward to a time when Bichon Frisés are the fashionable "gang" dogs. There would be no more fighting, as everyone would be too busy cooing. at the little chaps

Each time the RSPCA is given publicity for this nonsense they are going to get more phone calls from people who hate their neighbours. Same for the kids who read the RSPCA claims that tough guys fight dogs. The RSPCA have created this situation with their fantasies and increased animal suffering.
Nick, Birmingham,
Put down the youths that are doing this.
If that`s not possible, then a ban on dog ownership for life(ANY DOG BREED/TYPE)
Throw the book at the humans and rehome the dogs after temperament testing.
These are wonderful dogs in good responsible homes.
Worldwide responsible owners are paying for this.
