Spanish students on a exchange trip to taste British culture were ambushed by a hooded gang who hurled bricks and bottles at them.
Police said that some of the assailants were as young as 11. The exchange students, aged 13-17, were chased down the street and sought refuge in the Heritage Park Special School, Sheffield, while emergency services travelled to the scene.
The students had arrived from Madrid to improve their English as part of a language exchange programme in Chesterfield, and had travelled to Sheffield to visit an ice rink.
After the attack three of the students were treated in hospital for cuts, bruises and shock.
John Hill, the headmaster at Heritage Park, said: “Many of the students were hysterical. These were nice, middle-class teenagers whose families had paid a lot of money for them to be here. Most of them were absolutely distraught. Many were suffering from shock and were sick. The whole of our dining room turned into a medical centre. We had to enact our school’s disaster policy.”
John Mothersole, the chief executive of Sheffield City Council, said that he was outraged. “Sheffield is a welcoming city. These mindless actions are not representative of true Sheffielders. This is totally unacceptable behaviour.”
June Graham, a co-ordinator at the School of Languages in Chesterfield, said: “We have never had problems like this before in Sheffield.” Beatriz Monge, the school’s manager, said: “It could be that Sheffield is becoming a dangerous city and we will avoid it.”

Most unfortunately, things like this are happening here in the US, too. These kids (presumably) do not have parents who care for them, or who punish them when they deserve it. They do stuff like this because they think they can get away with it, and when they do, they only get worse and worse.
Natalie, Napa, California, USA
Here's the living proof that gangs of chavs chasing down foreigner students DO EXIST. We have always heard of scary stories of friends visiting the UK and being hosted in crappy State Council Neighborrhoods. Local authorities in cities like Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton should take good note!

The courts have the Laws and the Power, But the Judges do not have the guts to enforce them.
Too many unelected Quango's,PP Correct, liberals and guarden readers running or is it ruining the country.
what happens in USA today happens in UK tomorrow black gettos Gang voilence,Drug Turf wars.
Ray Matthews, Santa Pola, Spain
Incredible. Where are we heading for? Nowhere is safe any longer.
josep, Tarragona, spain
Russell, im afraid its not the fault of the immigrants as you say. If you read again the article, you will find that the spanish boys were attacked by english people. Or maybe you are saying is the fault of the spanish boys?
Madhava, Barcelona, Spain
I work in a hotel in a touristic town in Spain. You can't generalize, but everytime English young people come we have a lot of troubles. Destroyed rooms, neighbours complaining, sometimes we have to call an ambulance for too much drinking... I'm talking about men between 16 and 30, not child.
Gabi, Salou, Spain
Do not throw any more bricks to them... They might build something illegally !.
Luz, Madrid, Spain
Don't think that this kind of things only happen in the UK. We also have very violent children down here in Spain, so I guess this is much more a global problem in democratic countries which allowed too many rights to certain people who should better be kept in cages than living in our society.
Álvaro, Huelva, España
There is obviously a problem with teenagers in England, the authorities must stop all this gun and knife gang culture. England need tougher laws to tackle these teenagers and they should stop giving benefits to all these lazy non educated families raising problematic children.
Peter, Bournemouth,
Please control your holligans kids, imagine when they grow up, they will use guns not only againts poor spanish kids, but they will kill for any reason people in Sheffield. Spanish language schools are now looking for alternative to UK, IT'S too dangerous send our well educated kids there.
Paco, Sevilla,
It's really sad when this things happens. Those kids will never forget that, and they will associate it to the UK. A bad impression when you are in another country (or confronting anything unknown or new to you) is usually what you remember first :(
Bra, Kmonte, Spain
The only difference between a zoo and some sections of UK society is that in a zoo the dangerous animals are caged. Please can we have an effective criminal justice system, with policing rather than an extended social services bureaucracy?
edward johns, Lannion, France
What these kids are doing is "testing" society (they have no father who cares perhaps) to see if anyone will say "you cannot do that" , but no one at all does say that ,and so they carry on doing worse and worse things and still they don't get chastised
and they realise they can do anything.
alex, london, uk
well what is more typical british than being chased by and gang , they only missed out on being knifed , perhaps another spanish group will see that first hand. All the time it seems to be the black kids being knifed , is it because they never see their fathers ?
john, nice , france
It seems this type of thing is happening everywhere: it's the same in Bradford - the tails of the standard distribution seem to be widening significantly. Things seem out of control.
Abdul Majeed, Bradford, West Yorkshire, West Yorkshire
This is because corporal punishment has been mischaracterised as assault by the hysteria of the children's lobbies.
Now the "children" are punishing us with the methods that should be used on them.
My headmaster left hot, red stripes on my rear - I could barely sit - and I never did it again!
Greg Lorriman, Leatherhead, UK
Political correctness has so much to answer for... add into the equation atrocious parenting, authority taken away from educators and an over valuation of the "magic and innocence" of children and the result is Terminator meets Lord of the Flies.
Geraldine Leale, Cape Town, South Africa
What a tragedy that this Government has allowed the Country to degenerate into such a violent place to live. What ,if anything, are they going to do about it ?. It needs REAL discipline in schools to be brought back but seems that they cannot even bring themselves to do that.
Alex, brighton, sussex
Ths what you get when you trash a countries culture. When you ridicule our traditions you inherit anarchy. THANKS MR BLAIR
John W, Oldham,
Just another example of what is happening in the UK. It is not safe to walk the streets anymore. Obviously this is because of weak laws, a poor judicial system and Illegal Immigrants. God save the Queen´s Empire or it will be surely lost.
Russell W. MacDonald, Huelva, Spain
