A murder investigation is under way after the “gruesome” discovery of what is believed to be the bodies of two Chinese students in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
Murder squad detectives said the victims, who were discovered in a flat in Croydon Road in the West End of the city on Saturday afternoon at 4.30pm, suffered “significant head injuries”.
The body of a Chinese man was found lying on a bed in the rear bedroom of the property and the body of a Chinese woman was found lying on a bed in the front bedroom, they said.
A neighbour close to the scene, who did not want to be identified, said: “I think they were students. They have not been here for long and they just kept themselves to themselves.”
The crime scene is in an area of terraced houses popular with students and Asian families.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Scenes of crime officers, pathologists and other specialists are working to establish the circumstances and the identities of the deceased.”
A silver hatchback car was last night taken away by police on a covered lorry while forensic experts in white suits examined the scene. Police tape was still in place this morning and officers continued to guard the cordoned off street and check cars outside the flat for clues.
The victims have not been formally identified and police are now attempting to trace next of kin.
A post-mortem examination was expected to be carried out on Sunday at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by a Home Office pathologist.
By coincidence, the flat is a couple of doors away from the former home of a murdered schoolboy.
Wesley Neailey was 11 when he was murdered in 1998 by convicted paedophile Dominic McKilligan.
The boy went out riding his bike from his home in Croydon Road and was found weeks later in the Northumberland countryside.
McKilligan, a student from the Bournemouth area, had recently been released from a young offender institution before the murder, and was jailed for life in 1999.
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “This is a nice place to live and we have been here for 15 years but seeing all the police activity has brought back memories of Wesley.”
The crime scene is a few minutes walk from Newcastle United's home ground where the team won a pre-season friendly 2-1 against Valencia last night.

Stop all this nonsense!
Nowadays violence is everywhere in the world, not just in the UK. And who do you all think you are to accuse the British Government of not protecting international students?
Are you sure foreign students in other countries can be totally safe?
Xiao, ..., china
This report ends with a reference to NUFC's victory in a football match? Can't you see how unfeasibly idiotic, crass and irrelevant that is?
Matt Ibbs, Newcastle,
So far some local teenagers often made some verbal abuse which still in acceptable level. But this has gone too far. I dont really understand how this can happen
Gin, Lancashire, UK
I received many phone calls from my parents and my friends in asia and it is true that some students preparing to come to UK to study are cancelling their application. I hope british government can do something about it especially for foreign student and neighborhood where many foreign students live
Gin, Lancashire, UK
Also should remember that by paying over £10k (which is much much more expensive than tuition for local people), foreign students expect at least to have a "secure feeling" while staying in uk
Gin, Lancashire, UK
I live on the next street from Croydon Rd, we are moving on the 1st Sep and I will be glad to see the back of this area. It is a short walk into the city centre but there are 101 different places I'd rather live around Newcastle.
Tom, Newcastle,
Despite the hysteria in the papers, crime, including violent crime is falling in Britain and has been for 10 years or so. I am not sure that crime levels in the UK are any different to any other 'western' countries.
Joe, Shanghai, China
It will be a nightmare for UK universities, as oversea students especially Chinese students contribute a significant amount of tuition fee as financial supports, after this terrific murdering. I believe that most prospective students will reconsider whether UK is a safe place to study or not..
Yi, Leicester,
Escalating costs and lack of personal security are two issues that will cause foreign students to reconsider UK as their country of choice to continue their education. So another nice little earner for HMG under threat.

Aw.... I admire you innocence, Cui from China... but that's not how the world works. And 'certainly not in the UK.
Howard, Manchester,
Call up the people to respect the life! To reduce the tragedy, and increase the level of safety.I hope a world with peace and equal to be establish.Muderers, there are so many options for you , why gone too far? It is not worth for you to go extremes.
CUI SHOUQIN, Guangdong, China
If the british government can't deal with crime in britain . . . perhaps an official complaint by the Chinese government over treatment of two of their nationals might force us into action.
