Two men have been arrested after a woman was allegedly pushed on to the rails at a train station after a row over smoking on the platform.
Linda Buchanan, 58, suffered a broken wrist and bruising to her legs after she confronted two men who were smoking at Farningham Road station.
The businesswoman narrowly missed a 750-volt live rail as she fell on to the tracks and was hauled out by fellow commuters before the next train was due to arrive at the station near Swanley in Kent.
A 30 year-old man was arrested in Dartford on Monday night before being questioned and then released on bail yesterday.
Last night a second man, 18, was also arrested in Dartford. He was in police custody being interviewed today.
On the afternoon of the attack Mrs Buchanan, who is a senior consultant for the American-owned company DBM, said: “I just feel I’m lucky to be alive. It could have been a lot worse than it is and I’m just shocked by the whole experience.”
She had asked two men to stop smoking on the platform twice in the week of the attack. Smoking is prohibited on all railway platforms in England under the ban introduced last April.
Police said she was “very lucky” not to have been more seriously injured.
Chief Superintendent Steve Morgan, of the British Transport Police, said today: “While this was an abhorrent incident, this type of offence on the rail network is extremely rare.
“Officers in this case have spent many days trawling through CCTV from stations between Farningham Rd and Victoria and have taken numerous witness statements from members of the public.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those members of the public who came forward and provided us with invaluable information to assist us in this investigation.”

If they get charged and sent to court the incompetent judges will let them off with a slap on the wrist
martin, Reading, Berkshire
The Uk is now full of what can only be called scum that dont't think twice before attacking someone.
The people that stood by were probably thinking of the amount of people they have read about over the last 8 months that have been stabbed / beaten to death by the same type of scum.
Darren, rhyl,
Do not knock the members of the public who did not assist at the time by holding the suspects. The law is biased in the criminals' favour now and they did not want to risk having to pay damages for bruising their arms.
What a mess Britain has become!
B J Deller, Marbella, Spain
Arthur, They are not charged yet never mind guilty but if they are the culprits I hope they are charged with attempted murder, for this is what it was. A message needs to be sent to all that think they are above the law, even the smoking law, break it and you will pay heavily.
Alan, Gillingham, kent
Im afraid the ongoing incompetence of the british police will yet again lead to no charges in this case, unless a speed camera catches the suspects speeding and they dont pay the fine, then the full force of british law will descend upon them.
mark, Bootle, uk
Id like to take this opportunity to thank those members..." pah, I bet Mrs Buchanan doesn't want any thanks going to the cowards that stood back on that platform and watched. They should all be ashamed of themselves.
The tide is turning, stand up for yourselves and those more vulnerable than you.
A Doyle, Manchester,
So what should be seen as 'attempted murder', and the guy they arrested is 'released on bail'. What would he have had to do to have been held by police!?!
Arthur, Newcastle,
