The body of a newborn baby was found amongst the rubbish at a recycling plant in Cambridgeshire today.
The grim discovery was made by a member of staff at the site in Fengate, Peterborough, this morning.
Cambridgeshire police have sealed off the area. “We were called at 7.30am after a worker at the recycling centre discovered the body of a newborn baby,” said a police spokeswoman.
“The scene has been preserved and we are the treating the death as suspicious. The body was found amongst the rubbish.”
The spokeswoman said the baby had yet to be identified. It is not yet known if the body was that of a boy or a girl.
The plant is in Fourth Drove, Fengate. It processes recyclable waste from the local area. The facility, which opened in 1997, is owned by Peterborough City Council operated by Viridor Waste Management Ltd.
A council spokesman said: “The materials recycling facility will remain closed while police continue their investigation following the tragic discovery.
“Staff remain on site and, once police have concluded their work, the facility will reopen. There will be no disruption to bin collections during this time.”

It just goes to show, no matter where you are in the world, people disregard life so easily. I am so sick of people just dumping off their children. I don't care if the baby was stillborn or not....or if it was a teen that gave birth...there are ways to do things anon. and the right way.
Theresa, Birmingham, US
If the baby was stillborn and dumped by a "frightened teenager or young woman", unless she was a victim of rape which I accept to be a remote statistical possibility in this case, she was "grown up" enough to engage in sexual intercourse that produced a child, so why not give the child a burial?
Tom Franklin, London, UK
I think that either way you look at it....we are human beings with a conscience...whether the baby was dumped due to miscarriage or being stillborn or murdered...its unacceptable...this world is getting worse by the minute...
Salona, Durban, South Africa
Hang on Are you not jumping the gun a little here. Do you know that this child was dumped while it was still alive, how do you know that you are looking at a murder these are gross presumptions. The child may have been still born, and from a frightened teeneger or young woman.

I think this is a very sad case, however i do keep a open mind. Many people can so easily blame the mother for doing this horrible thing but i consider all possible causes i.e another family member taking the baby from its mother without her consent.ultimately this should'nt have happened.
carly, southend-on-sea, UK
im a mother and there is no way i would abandon my baby in a skip that is apsolutely discusting.yes think of the mother she maybe sad but she could have handeld the situation better. i find the whole story apauling and i hope who ever is responsible for this is punished. what is the world coming to
becky, gloucetser,
Nina and Arfcollins.
I, and you, should have no sympathy for the mother at all.
I agree with Heathers comment that whatever the circumstances that led the mother to do this, the baby could have been left somewhere more dignified than on a rubbish dump. There is no excuse for such cruelty.
Sarah, Cornwall,
Mothers have killed and the reason has been post natal depression. But the dumping of the body in such a way hardly fits in with the symptons or reactions of post natal depression and if it was a mother that should be argued in court.
katee, london,
Awful, despicable.
But it will be the same old story. Some woman will be traced as the mother, and it will be felt that it's "not in the public interest" to prosecute the murderer.
She'll get away with it. And there's no deterrent to stop other women doing it.
PND? Murder is still a choice.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
i am shocked that anyone could blame this on postnatal depression.. i had it with both my children & i would never ever have have but my baby (alive or dead) in a rubbish skip/bin.. my heart goes out to this baby & i can only but hope and pray it is in a better place now.. god bless its little soul
clair, ashington,
to suggest that suffering from post natal depression is in any way a reason to kill a baby is absoultely ludicrous
Catherine , Belfast,
It's very easy to blame 'today's' society and young people for this, but clandestine births and infant deaths are as old as the hills. Somewhere there is a grieving mother. We shoud be thinking of her.
Arfcollins, Southampton,
Janet of Ft. Worth - Ever heard of post natal depression?
Nina, Swansea,
You know women who throw their babies in bins are the worst type of human being! Here are the basics...if you dont want chldren then use birth control!!! They babies that die each year by the hands of their mother have no say in life! How is that fair?? Horrible!!!
Janet, Ft.Worth, United States
I bet this happens all the time.
This is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
alex, Reading, UK
Bob - This kind of thing isn't new, it was done in the 40's/50's by unmarried women, and the same has happened throughout the existence of man. The difference is that stories like this are so easily transmitted to the general public. It is still sickening, but not symptomatic of the "youth of today"
Stuart Kingston, Huddersfield,
Whilst the circumstances may be terribly sad - who would choose to throw a baby's body into a rubbish skip? Assuming the child was stillborn, they could have buried the baby in woodland or anywhere more dignified and with humanity. Have they no soul?
Heather, Nowich,
As terrible as this story is nothing suprises me in this in the society we live in today where life means so little to so many people, this child will no doubt turn out to be the result of young people treating sex as a game rather than a serious matter.
Bob, London, England
