Police investigating reports that property stolen from Victoria and David Beckham’s home was offered for sale on eBay have arrested the son of the couple’s housekeepers.
The arrest of Gareth Emmett, 25, came several days after his parents were themselves held and questioned about the allegations.
Today Eric Emmett dismissed as "fabricated nonsense" allegations that he and his wife June stole personal items from the celebrity couple and tried to sell them on eBay.
Mr and Mrs Emmett, who worked at the Beckhams' Rowneybury House mansion in Hertfordshire, were arrested on suspicion of theft on Friday and released on police bail. Their son was arrested last night.
Suspicions were reportedly raised when Tony and Jackie Adams, Mrs Beckham's parents, spotted memorabilia belonging to the former Spice Girl and her husband, the former England football captain, on the eBay auction site.
According to reports, Mr and Mrs Adams recognised some of their daughter’s designer clothes on offer to bidders, along with the footballer’s worn boots, and then discovered the items were missing from the couple's house, nicknamed "Beckingham Palace" by the tabloid media.
Some of the items reportedly offered on eBay are thought to include football boots emblazoned with the names of the couple's three sons, Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo.
This morning the Emmetts did not want to speak to reporters at their large detached home in Nazeing, an Essex village near Waltham Abbey, not far from London.
Mr Emmett, who answered the door, said that the events of the last few days had been "very distressing", and the reports about it untrue. "What is in the papers is fabricated nonsense. Totally fabricated, 99 per cent of it is totally untrue."
Asked for his response to the arrest of his son, Eric Emmett said: "I cannot comment on that."
Asked how the eBay site could be traced to his address, Eric Emmett said: "It doesn’t involve myself, that is for sure."
Hertfordshire Police confirmed that detectives were investigating an allegation of theft from a private address.
"The theft was reported to police at 4.45pm on Friday," he said. "Three people have been arrested over the theft. A 56-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man from Essex were arrested in Essex on Friday.
"A 25-year-old man from Essex was arrested yesterday evening. He has been bailed to a police station in Hertfordshire in November."
A spokesman for eBay said that the auction site was co-operating with the police to establish what had happened.
"If it transpires that our site was being used to list stolen goods then we will work with the police to press for the harshest penalties," he added.
Beckham, 33, a former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, moved to Los Angeles with his wife and three sons last year in a blaze of publicity. The family now divide their time between LA and Rowneybury House.
The mansion was the venue for the Beckhams’ famous party for charity before the 2006 World Cup.
This year Mrs Beckham said she was giving up singing for good to concentrate on fashion. Last month the 34-year-old launched a clothing range at New York Fashion Week, along with a short, spiky new hairstyle.
A spokesman for the Beckhams said: "There has been an incident and the matter is in the hands of the police. I cannot comment any further."
Beckham is currently with the England team in Belarus for tomorrow's World Cup qualifier. He came on as a substitute in the 5-1 win over Kazakhstan at Wembley on Saturday, earning a rousing ovation from fans, and capped his 106th appearance in an England shirt by setting up a goal for Wayne Rooney.
