A 26-year-old father named on a leaked list of BNP members said today that he feared for the safety of his family after a car exploded outside his house.
The suspected firebomb attack destroyed the vehicle on his street in Liversedge, West Yorkshire, at around 10.30pm yesterday.
The man’s address was one of 12,000 published on the internet in a leak of the BNP membership list prompting police to investigate whether he was targeted.
The former party member, who is self-employed, told The Times: “That list is a dangerous thing, it should never have been published.
“I’ve got a two-year-old son, so of course I’m worried that we may be targeted.”
The man, who asked not to be named, said that he was not at home last night because as he is currently on holiday with his family. He was alerted to the attack when his sister-in-law called in a panic asking where the car keys were so that she could move his own vehicle away from the Peugeot 206 that was engulfed in flames.
“I don’t think it was anyone after me,” he said. “Our car was outside our house and the neighbours’ car was outside theirs, but I would have been really worried if I’d heard the explosion.”
Firefighters and police officers were called at 10.40pm and found the car on fire. Two uniformed police officers were standing at a cordoned-off area of the street today where a charred patch of debris was visible on the road and path outside one of the red brick semi-detached houses.
A woman who did not want to be named said that she heard the explosion in front of her house. “I was just nodding off and just heard this boom. I looked out of the window and the car was on fire,” she said.
“There was nothing left of the car. The roof was blown off, the windscreen was blown off, there were bits of car in my garden and bits of car in next door’s garden.”
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said today that they were investigating the motive of the attack. He said the car was parked at the time and no one was hurt. Asked about the proximity to a BNP member’s home, he said: “The cause of the damage and any potential motive all form part of the current investigation.”
Andrew Purdy, who lives on the street, said he was watching television when he heard the explosion.
“I looked outside and couldn’t see anything except black smoke. There were flames coming out of the car.”
Describing the vehicle, which he believed was a Peugeot 206, Mr Purdy said: “It was like a baked bean can, splattered all over. The windscreen was in front of my house.”
The BNP leadership has threatened to pursue legal action against the person who published the list of members, claiming that the safety of party activists had been compromised. The comprehensive document posted on a blog last weekend included names, home addresses and telephone numbers for thousands of members of the far-right party.
David Exley, Kirklees organiser for the BNP said: “I spoke to the police this morning and they confirmed that a car has been firebombed last night and one of the lines of inquiry is the person who lives next door to whose car it was is on the list on the internet.
Mr Exley said it was disgraceful that the list had been published. “That list covers everybody who has ever contacted our head office for whatever reason,” he said.
“It could be this man got an information pack, looked at it, decided it’s not for him and thrown it away.
“But unfortunately somebody has irresponsibly put this list on the internet.”
The man in question, however, confirmed to The Times today that he had been a member of the party but he had since left.

While firebombs are a worrying development, I find it hard to have much sympathy for the BNP. There members/grass roots supporters carry out violent attacks on ethinc minorities etc. I fear should the BNP achieve elction it would spell the end for democracy in Britain.
KS, Hull,
"had been a member and has now since left". They are all saying that - How convenient!
This is a non-story - there is no link between the explosion and the man's identity.
AB, London, UK
I requested an information package from the BNP some years back and have since received Post every now and then so i wondered the BNP must have my datails on a list of some sort and so i checked and yes my name and address is on the list!!
Now i am not a member and woudnt become one.
Dick, birmingham, GB
If they are a legal organisation why the fuss.
Just because you don't like them
Now you see the folly of national databases
Phil, Preston,
What would happen to immigrant kids if BNP had power? BNP wouldn't go to Iraq, they would just stop immigration and leave Iraq and Afganistan to those people. This is not democracy where a persons political choice puts him in danger. Shame on those who support it. What goes around comes around.
John Morgan, Old Stratford, UK
The new McCarthyism!
Jonathan, Oxforshire, England
So many people are so brainwashed! I'm considering voting for the BNP, my partner's BLACK and so is she! Time you read their manifesto instead of listening to Left Wing propaganda. If you're British and you want to live in a Democracy better vote BNP. Anarchy if you vote for LabConLib Alliance.
Marcus, London, England
I am not racist but considering voting for the BNP. I don't want Brussels to control the UK, continued immigration/forced multiculturalism, Islamisation of the UK and I don't want our culture and history to be destroyed either. There is no party other than the BNP that will guarantee this.
Marcus, London, England
You should check out the BNP website. They seem to be saying what the rest of us are thinking! Why not give them a chance?
Mark, London,
A small taste of BNP medicine I feel.
David, West Yorkshire,
I hope this man seeks com-pen-say-shun for his distress, that of his children. his cat/dog etc.
Why not? Everyone else does, only you the taxpayer coughing up? I hate to say it (not on the list) but do you HAVE to be brown before it works?
How horrible are some of your commentaters.
Hilary teechan, Pennsylvania, USA
Can anyone disagree with me when I say that this actually shows that the BNP have a point when they talk about this country becoming ever increasingly violent, whether it be from non-integrating migrants or "bored" out of control youths this attck is not being treated with the tolerance it should be
JImmy, Worcester,
The views of the BNP are deplorable, but if this was an attack based on his membership of the party, the attacker is no better than those he abhors.
margot, Fife,
We have a worrying problem,if people cannot join a legal party without fear of persecution.Teachers, doctors , policemen , and a vicar amongst others are members across the country, what is most worrying is the members, whom live in high immigration areas.Dagenham bnp live next door to immigrants.
john lamb, dagenham, essex
I wonder why the members of the BNP are so worried about their info getting out, if they are a
non-violent and non-racist organization.
Like I said.... *IF* they aren't violent and racist.
Gary, Halifax,
Atacking BNP members could back fire, it could start an new terorist organisation to be born. If the goverment and the media and the police are always against them and now they are getting fire bombed.
Its has happened in every country were people are supressed, and there human right denied.
John, sheff, south yorks
"Down the road", Simon?Try again. The explosion was right outside his house, and came just days after his name was published on the internet for being part of the BNP. This was an act of terror, intended to frighten people into submission. Are you cool with that? Suggest you read your history books.
Katie, London, UK
The BNP have shot themselves in the foot as Nick Griffin has already said it was a list of actual paid-up members and not including those who have just expressed an interest.
Lets remember that Hitler's political party was also a legal and legitimate party and look how that turned out.
Robert, London,
I've just heard gun-shot explosions and as a self-confessed vegetarian living in a live-stock farming community I am concerned for the welfare of my 6 and 4 year old sons.
Of course it could just have been the farmer across the road shooting rabbits.......
Alex, Salisbury, United Kingdom
While it would be very sad to see the rise of the BNP, we must not revert to violence to rid ourselves of a political party, We must accept the majority rule, if we don't we will go down the same road as some of the unsettled African states.
Irene Chapple, Bellac, France
Whether or not you agree with the politics of the BNP, they are a political party and in a democracy people are entitled to support them. They should also not lose their jobs or be subjected to violence & intimidation because of those beliefs. Isn't that what anti discrimination law is all about?
amelia, cheshire, UK
How can you say all BNP members are racist? This has only been told to you by the leftist media and the liberal Establishment. I challenge you all to actually look at the BNPs policies and see that they do not support racism.
The people who committed this crime are the real fascists.
Alan, Surrey, England
what if bnp have staged this?
j, lancs,
While I loath the BNP with a passion, and chuckled at their appeal to civil liberties, I don't believe that they should be threatened with violence. If the two-year-old had been hurt, that would have been a sickening tragedy, regardless of his father's (former) beliefs.
Louis, Oxford, England
If that was a BNP member firebombing a muslim's car it would be subject media frenzy and the full force of the law would be on the scene.
Double standards...But what does everyone expect? The whip is being used against normal everyday Joe's.
darren, London,
for gods sake we live in a Democracy and must abide by what others have to say no matter what their beliefs may be ,they have that right to belong to any political party they deem to represent their beliefs.
The people that want to be violent to get their own way should be dealt with by the law ,
alexander macdonald, londo, uk
If this 'was' aimed at the BNP member (he may just want to get his name in the media) it is highly inappropriate, yet intollerance it always met with intollerance. What goes around comes around.
Someday he'll learn that tollerance is usually met with tollerance, and everyone's happy. Mostly...
Daniel, Stoke, Staffs
Perhaps he'll experience more explosions and terror and persecution and decide to emigrate. Perhaps he'll live in another country earning a living and contributing to the local economy.
Or perhaps sponge off it, and engage a lawyer at the tax payers expense to sue for hurt feelings.
jon, Jakarta,
This is a disgraceful and despicable crime based on a person's LEGALLY held views. We British have a proud democratic tradition but it appears that our democracy is under threat from socialists and left wing radicals. Irrespective of BNP or any other LEGAL party we must defend our democracy.
Richard , Nottingham,
Freedom of speech under new labour means think what you like as long as it is the same as me! I abhor the teachings of some religions but i would not carry out acts of violence against its followers or their places of worship!
A Thorn, London,
I agree that it is a non story unless the motive for the explosion can be found.
The area is fairly dodgy and cars being set onfire is not uncommon.
The fact that a BNP party member lives down the road from where it happened is not on it's own worth a news headline.
Simon, London,
There's no place for racism in this or any other country. Where America leads, we'll all follow. Because they are correct.
Freddie, London, UK
I agree all party lists should be published; also for full transparancy the way people vote should also be published.
After all people should not be ashamed about their politics; we have a tolerant society and its hardly going to lead to you losing your job or someone fire bombing your house.
jeff, worthing,
During the German occupation of Denmark, non-Jewish Danes decided to wear the Star of David as a counter-persecution strategy.
Now in the UK, we resident foreigners of no party affiliation should join the BNP and publish our names and addresses in protest against political violence.
Steven, Oxford, England
Certain orginal members of the BNP have convictions for violence. Allegedly bombing someones car is wrong and they should be punished.
John, London,
chris in leeds that was a beautiful comment
Hamish, London,
Dean, I take your point but there is a risk here that some people might start to have sympathy and the BNP become the victims, gathering support as they go. It is important not to let that happen
Tom, London,
Before WWII there were fights between fascists and communists in the most unlikely places like the local Ragged School. This died out after the war, we were at peace with Germany and Japan and Russia, but we had an evil left wing who did not let it go, but seized power to torment us.
ged, manchester,
It just goes to show who the real haters are!!How many muslims have been killed by the bnp??none!! how many muslims have been killed by labour??about 30000!!i rest my case<<<the bnp are a people elected legitimate party,,,i thought we lived in a democracy! God save the queen!!!
Gavin, Burnley, England
I have no sympathy whatsoever. He's worried about his kids, but doesn't care about what would happen to the kids of immigrants if the BNP had any kind of power. Double standards make me sick.
Dean Rodrigues, Oxford, UK
Its always different when it happens to those members. BNP are more than happy to allow violence to the ehtnic minority but when it happens to them, its a different story.
Hurts when the shoe is on the other foot. Mmm
Sujeewa, London,
Party politics and ideologies aside; setting a car to explode is a crime. Expression of opinion alone isn't.
And no Steven, this is not a non-story. This is about a group of people being targeted for their views (albeit a very unpopular one). Freedom of speech anyone?
Chris, Cambridge,
Who are the intolerant ones here?
Stuart, London, United Kingdom
Ref: S.Rudd, Colchester, U.K.
Far from a 'non-story' this is highly apposite. A man, his wife & two-year-old son are threatened by a car-wrecking explosion outside their home. It could be you.
L., Glos., England.
Perhaps he'll experience more explosions and terror and persecution and decide to emigrate. Perhaps he'll live in another country earning a living and contributing to the local economy. Then perhaps a nationalist party will be elected to power in that country and he'll be forcibly deported...
Chris, Leeds,
Steve Rudd: this is not a non-story. I abhor most of the views of the BNP, but it is a precious right for anyone to be a member of a political party, hold their view, and not be persecuted for that membership.
Debate openly and rationally with them. Don't persecute or attack.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
Hopefully after this and the vicious & nasty comments that have been popping up all over the Internet from the liberal/left people will see who are the real villains!
John, Salford, England
This is a non-story!
Steven Rudd, Colchester, UK
Whilst one can't condone violence or terrorism of any kind, it is ironic that people who have formally put their name to supporting racism and persecution of people, are now outraged and fearful that they may suffer the same fate themselves.
All party membership lists should be published.
Matt Langley, Crawley, UK
