Police have released CCTV footage which shows a rapist stalking his lone victim before he carried out a vicious attack.
Moments after the footage was recorded, the attacker pounced as his 39-year-old victim turned off the main road down the path leading to her home in Whalley Range, Manchester.
He approached her, pulled her jacket over her head to cover her face and forced her to the rear of the building where he repeatedly raped her. He then fled on foot.
The attack happened between 1.50am and 3.15am on Sunday, June 22, earlier this year.
Forensic scientists have been able to isolate the rapist’s DNA but it has not, so far, provided a match to any known offender. Detectives are concerned that he may be preparing to strike again.
Detective Inspector Terry Crompton, based at Longsight CID, in Manchester, said: “This was a horrific attack on a woman who was subjected to a terrifying ordeal over a prolonged period.
“Since the allegation was made back in June, officers have been working hard to identify the victim's attacker and now we need the public's help with the missing piece of the puzzle.
“We have obtained DNA and are systematically checking individuals who could be responsible, but we may be looking for someone who has not come to the attention of the police before."
The CCTV footage shows the lone female figure walking home along Upper Chorlton Road, a busy suburban street. Seconds later her attacker, a stocky white man, moves into view. He is clearly in pursuit of his victim.
Police do not know whether the rapist lives locally, was visiting friends or had simply spent the evening ion one of the many nearby bars.
Mr Crompton said: “If you do recognise him or suspect someone of being responsible, please come forward so we can investigate.
“We do not want this man to strike again, so if you do know something please do speak to us. You could have that vital piece of information we need to catch this man.”
