Bradford A two-year-old girl died in pain and distress after a four-week campaign of violence by her mother and her boyfriend, a court was told yesterday.

Sanam Navsarka had 107 injuries. She could no longer walk, all four limbs were fractured and she had difficulty breathing before her death in May last year. The pathologist believed that metal poles, found in the home, may have been used to hit her.

Zahbeena Navsarka, of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and her partner, Subhan Anwar, both 21, deny murder. Mr Anwar also denies causing or allowing the death of a child. Ms Navsarka has admitted failing to protect her daughter from her partner.

Julian Goose, QC, prosecuting at Bradford Crown Court, said that both adults had been “willing to inflict really serious pain” on the girl. Their treatment had been “cruel and callous”.

“Whether it was one or the other who actually inflicted the injuries, doing nothing to help her or save her over a four-week period up to her death amounted to encouragement and support for all of the violence that took place. They were, we say, both in it together.” The case continues.
