Watch the new ITN footage in full | The Guardian film of the Ian Tomlinson incident
Dramatic new footage emerged tonight showing what appears to be the powerful blow from a policeman’s baton that struck Ian Tomlinson shortly before he collapsed and died at last week's anti-capitalist protests in London.
The ITN video shows a fresh angle of the incident which is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
The footage appears to show a policeman in riot gear make a forceful swing of the baton from head height towards the newspaper vendor, who was attempting to make his way home.
After Mr Tomlinson got up and stumbled away from the scene, the new footage appears to show the officer in question readjusting his face mask, watching the man leave and then speaking to a more senior officer. It is understood that the officer in question has now come forward to speak to the IPCC.
Previous mobile phone footage obtained by The Guardian showed Mr Tomlinson's fall but the new video appears to show the power of the baton strike. Both film clips can be viewed in our player above.
The IPCC announced today that a second post-mortem will be carried out on the body of Mr Tomlinson. It also announced that its own investigators are to take over the inquiry into his death.
The organisation had previously been directing an investigation by City of London Police but video footage and testimony from witnesses at the scene, appeared to call the official police version of events into question. City of London officers were also present at the scene.
A freelance photographer who witnessed the events, Anna Branthwaite, has already told how she saw Mr Tomlinson being hit by a police officer - and said today that incident happened a few minutes before the one captured on video.
"People are rightly concerned about this tragic death and this footage is clearly disturbing," Deborah Glass, the IPCC Deputy Chair, said in a statement.
"We have been heavily involved in this investigation from day one, directing the City of London Police's investigation and liaising with Mr Tomlinson's family. In light of new information which we became aware of yesterday evening, we have now taken the decision to independently investigate."
Mr Tomlinson, a 47-year-old newspaper vendor, was not part of the anti-capitalist demonstration called to protest against the G20 but his route home took him right past the Bank of England, where police had corralled hundreds of protesters inside barricades.
