Two Tottenham football supporters were found guilty of shouting indecent chants at the footballer Sol Campbell today in the first case of its kind to be heard in court.
The fans were arrested after homophobic abuse rang around Fratton Park, the home of Portsmouth football club, during a match against Tottenham in September last year.
Ian Trow, 48, from Milton Keynes, and a 14-year-old boy had pleaded not guilty at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.
The pair were charged with indecent chanting after police released images of suspects thought to have been making abusive chants during the bad tempered match. Campbell, a former England player, is unpopular with Spurs fans because he decided to leave the club and move to their local rivals, Arsenal, in 2001.
After a three-hour trial, Georgette Holbrook, chairwoman of the panel, found the two defendants guilty of chanting: “Come on gay boy, that’s my gay boy”.
“We find that the words used were in extremely bad taste, they were inappropriate, shocking and disgusting, and as such they were indecent,” she said.
Trow was given a three year football banning order, fined £500 and ordered to pay £400 costs. The 14-year-old boy was given a three year football banning order, a conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £400.
The magistrates were shown a DVD of footage recorded by police showing Tottenham fans at the match. A lip-reader examined the film and said the defendant and the youth, who was 13 at the time, could be seen shouting that Campbell was gay.
Sophie Stevens, prosecuting, said: “The police and members of the public considered there was significant abuse from the travelling Tottenham supporters, abuse above what is . . . accepted at a football match.”
In a statement read to the court, Campbell said he felt upset and victimised by the chanting.
He said: “I felt absolutely disgusted at this and I didn’t react because of my profile and I feared I might make the situation worse and cause problems.
“I felt totally victimised and helpless by the abuse I received on this day. It has had an effect on me personally and I do not want it to continue. I support the police in their action.”
Angie Cunningham, for the defence, said it could not be assumed that the two defendants joined in other chants heard at the match and that they did not feel they had behaved unreasonably.
“They passionately and wholeheartedly believed their behaviour and language didn’t overstep the mark of what is acceptable behaviour and language at a football match,” she said.
The video footage also showed other chants which were shouted by up to 2,500 fans, including abusive chants of a sexual nature.
Following the match, Hampshire Police released images of 16 people wanted in connection with the chants. A total of 11 were arrested and four men pleaded guilty to the offence of indecent chanting in January and were sentenced to a three-year football banning order and a fine.
The Crown Prosecution Service said three men and two 15-year-old boys have been given police cautions. The two supporters found guilty today were the first to have prosecutions heard in court for indecent chanting under the Football Offences Act 1991.
