This is how it went: the police did not think this family worthy of help. The MP did not think this family worthy of help. The council did not think this family worthy of help. The education authorities who deal with special needs children, did not think this family worthy of help. The social services in the area did not think this family worthy of help. So, how are they all sleeping now?
Sue Appleby
I feel so sorry for this woman. For two years I suffered terrible abuse from a crazy alcoholic neighbour. My own home became a prison. Yet the police never acknowledged the misery that I was going through. When he finally attacked me and we went to court it took another year, because he kept pretending he wasn't well enough to appear in court. And after he was given a suspended sentence, he went on abusing me. When I complained again to the police they asked me if I had a witness. 'No, I live alone'. Tough, they can't help. The law in this country is on the side of the perpetrator.
John Marchant
In the name of simple humanity, Leicestershire Police should hang their collective heads in shame, not just for their lack of action but because of their attitude and attempts to avoid the blame.
Rachel O'Neill
I'm at my desk looking at her daughter's picture, and I feel such sadness... because the family was tortured; and because after trying to protect her family, the person that ultimately hurt her daughter the most, was her. I read that she doused her own car with gas and lit the car on fire... why on earth would she choose such a horrible death for herself and her harmless child?? I'm horrified at what these monsters got away with and even more so at what Mom did as well... and so sad that her daughter never had a choice, it seems. I only pray that they took something before she lit her car up.
Neil Bowers
The sad truth is that the modern constabulary, with all its targets, strategies and initiatives, doesn’t really care. It is beset by pension watching, form filling, ‘culturally obsessed’, minority grouping prioritising, wholly inadequate, obsessively risk averse, sick note toting, box ticking, Willo-the-Wisp characters existing purely in name and never in nature. Had she reacted to the miscreants, and only then, would she have felt the reassuring nature of the British police as they took her off to be prosecuted for infringing the civil liberties/human rights of the egg throwing and abuse hurling youths.
Jo Morris
In fairness to the police, if you read some of the reports that were made, one can see why they thought she was overreacting. I'm afraid I don't think you really need to call the police to report some juveniles smoking. Some people just use the police as another limb of the welfare state.
