MEASURES to tackle antisemitism in British universities will be unveiled this week amid concern about rising discrimination.
The government will warn vice-chancellors they must not ignore antiJewish activity on campuses and must prevent prejudiced lecturers, guest speakers and extremist political organisations stirring up hatred against Israel.
A recent Commons report highlighted attacks on undergraduates, a lack of respect by lecturers and tutors for the needs of observant Jewish students and a growing tolerance of extreme language against Israel during student debates on the Middle East.
There is particular concern about so-called “Islamic” antisemitism, with radical Muslim clerics, or their followers, being allowed to preach antiJewish hatred in universities.
Phil Woolas, the communities minister, labelled the findings of the all-party parliamentary report on antisemitism “very worrying” and warned that the government was ready to take radical action.
Woolas said: “Our response will be far tougher than anticipated. We are very worried about Islamic antisemitism on campuses. In this country we tend to see it as something of the past. It is not.”
Although the government will not announce legislation this week Woolas said it had not been ruled out.
Detailed measures to tackle antisemitism were agreed last week after a meeting with the prime minister. Police forces must now keep records of antisemitic attacks, the Foreign Office will be required to raise the issue with Arab countries such as Egypt and Jordan, which produce some of the most extreme antisemitic material, and a taskforce will be set up to combat antisemitism.
Guidelines for universities are expected to say that campus authorities should record all complaints of antisemitism made by students, including statements or speeches. University vice-chancellors are also expected to be warned not to tolerate academics whose critical views of Israel “cross the line” from personal interest or activism to abuse of power.
The government is also expected to criticise the boycotting of contact with academics working in Israel by some university departments and say lecturers who oppose boycotts must be supported.
Denis MacShane, a former Europe minister, who chaired the parliamentary inquiry, presented to Blair last autumn, said: “During our evidence sessions we heard of Jewish students having antisemitic graffiti scrawled on their doors, and of extremist Muslim groups being invited to speak on campuses.
“There are also attempts to ban people from putting forward Israel’s case in debates on the Middle East. Furthermore, the British National party is increasingly active on campuses.”
His report found that Jewish students felt “isolated and unsupported,” and that pro-Palestine debates were being used as a “vehicle for antiJewish language”. It also noted that casual antiJewish “banter” was becoming increasingly socially acceptable.
At least 268,000 people in England and Wales classify themselves as Jews. Two-thirds live in London and surrounding counties and 10% in Manchester, with the remainder concentrated in other big cities.

I am not a Jew, but am indeed a Semite! I am a Palestinian Arab Muslim and a direct descendant of the Prophet Abraham peace and blessings be upon him.
The attitudes of Jews and Israeli's towards Palestine and Palestinians is in its self an act of anti-semetism yet no where in the world is it fought! While I denounce any racism towards any people, criticism of Israel which stole my land, killed my neighbour and demolished my uncles house and left him and his 9-strong family homeless, is not anti-semetism.
What we now see is not a growth of anti-semetism, but a growth of anti-Islamism with articles such as this being an example. Reminding you of history, Jews never lived in true peace like they did under the rule of the Muslims. During the Spanish Inquisition which prosecuted Muslims and other minority groups, the Jews in Andalusia chose to follow the Muslims back to Morocco and other Arab Muslim countries because they knew it was where they would be safe and treated justly.

In her comment to this article Heike.schacht voices a common misconception, rationalization and ignorance. Muslims have practiced violence against Jews (and others) since the days of Mohammed. The Koran states that Jews are descendents of apes and pigs. It is part and parcel of Islam to practice, teach and foment hatred against any non-Muslim (infidel) and especially Jews.

This is encouraging news. However, the few comments to date highlight the intellectual dystopia that permeates the politically illiterate articulations of so many people who dabble in Middle East discourse. There is no anti-semetism (sic) because Jews are not semites - implying that everything is a figment of the Jews imagination I guess! Or typically a genuine concern about anti-semitism on campus slips into a non sequitous argument that sees all criticism of Israel as being seen as anti-semitic which is nonsense. I recall when I was at University in the late 70's that the problem of deep and irrational hostility to Israel was prevalent but it has definately got worse and it is definately down to an unholy alliance between the Left and Islamism - not Islam.

Unfortunately the Israeli hatred and persecutionof Palestinians, and slaughter of Palestinian children has made many Moslems turn against Jews living in other countries.

We must all recognise that all people and their belief systems should be respected and it is the role of educational institutions to set high standards. No student should be descriminated against by any other student and unfortunately many jewish students at university today are on the receiving end of anti-semetic behaviour which is often presented as representing oppostion to the policies of the Israeli government or anti zionism and not anti semetic views. Should a student from Zimbabwe be vicitiminsed and descriminated against because people oppose the policies of Magabe or an Iranian because of the words and actions of Ahmadinejad? I think not.
We need to educate both lecturers and students on campus so that they are much better informed about the complex situation in the Middle East or we are failing as a society to educate. We must not turn a blind eye to what is going on on university campuses. There are still jewish survivors that remember where this kind of behaviour can lead
Pam Nathan, London,
It is really funny!!!!
None of the jews in Israel are semitic. They are mixed people from around the world, who were homeless. and because of the generosity of original semitics, that is Palestinians, they hosted Jews.
Claudia Bandiz, Madrid,
R Lines: I recommend you pick up a dictionary and look up the word "anti-semitism", as it is clearly a concept you have not grasped.
LB, London,
Why is anti-semitism being associated with Islam? I think this is misinformation and Islamophobic as Islam in no way endorses racial hatred. If some Muslims engage in anti-Semitism that is not to say that Islam is anti-Semitic. Also, why is criticism of Israel deemed anti-Semitic? Israel is a political entity and therefore, theoretically, open to criticism as all other states and political entities - why does Israel command special treatment? How can we allow such limits to freedom of speech and political debate in a British democracy that is supposed to be independent of all other nations?
Zara Bakir, London,
What took them so long?
This problem has been around since the 90s.
Jews have frequently complained about these problems with little/no action from the authorities to combat them for fear of offending the growing Muslim population. This has opened the door to attacks on synagogues, cemetaries and even school children. Only now, when the attacks are beginning to impinge on the wider community, via bus and train bombs, are the dangers becoming apparent to everyone else.
Didn't Britain learn, in the 30s, that appeasement is not the road to go down?
JacquiB, LONDON, UK
Anti-semitism is to blame the jews for everrything: the BNP, like all other political parties, is obviously increasingly active on campuses: to imply that the two are in anyway connected, is deceitful. That , by the way, could be the reason why more voters are deserting the main politiacal parties, and are actually reading the small print.
R Lines, ilminster, Somerset
It's the government's fault entirely by promoting a 'four legs good, two legs bad', 'some are more equal than others' hard line multi-culturalism. Will Tony Blair and Ruth Kelly apologise ?
Ibnez, Homerton,
Jews have played a VITAL positive role in the UK's development - from Business to Culture to the highest levels of Politics - throughout the centuries. In just one generation Immigrant muslim communities have been ALLOWED to undermine the mutual confidence that has been built between the UK's predominantly Christian society and its Jewish citizens - thus making the Jewish community feel alienated and isolated.
The Clash of Civilisations is well and truly here, however much the Chattering Classes and political establishment would try to convince us otherwise.
