All-white schools should be twinned with predominantly black or Asian schools to help to heal social, racial and class divides, the Government said yesterday.
Jim Knight, the Schools Minister, said that he would also like to see pupils in faith schools becoming pen pals with their peers in schools of different faiths, and for children in rural schools to visit their inner-city counterparts.
Such partnerships could be crucial in promoting community relations and would allow pupils to meet youngsters from different backgrounds. “I’m quite keen on faith-based schools twinning with those of other faiths so they can talk to each other about their faith and extend their understanding. Muslim schools that I represent are pretty homogeneous and mono-faith and very much single-ethnic background.
“Equally, I have a secondary school judged outstanding for its religious education, but when I talked to a class of 15-year-olds about faith, they had never met anyone of the Muslim faith or a Hindu.”
Where there was no local school with children from other backgrounds, Mr Knight suggested that schools should forge virtual relationships on-line in other parts of the country or the world.
A primary school in his Dorset constituency, for example, had formed a link with an inner-city school in East London and made a visit there so that the children could meet. The link was forged by a member of staff who moved from Tower Hamlets to Weymouth.
Mr Knight’s comments, at the National Association of Head Teachers conference in Bournemouth, came a week after a warning by the Commission for Racial Equality that Britain was in danger of becoming a “mini-America with racially determined schools”.
Nationally, only 2 per cent of secondaries and 5 per cent of primaries in England have no pupils from minority ethnic groups. But in areas where the ethnic minority population is above the 8 per cent national average, partial segregation along race and faith lines can be entrenched. In Bradford, for example, 62 per cent of secondary schools are predominantly white, and 21 per cent are predominantly nonwhite.
The Government is introducing a statutory duty on schools to promote community cohesion, defined as “a common vision and sense of belonging by all communities”.

You know why after 50 years, the 3 main races in Malaysia are no closer in relations than they were 50 years ago?
In fact thanks to the Malay-dominated Government, the divisive policies on governing the country (social apartheid) are the reasons for a never united Malaysia. Policies are deliberately implemented to differentiate the Malay race from the other races and not because the minority groups refuse assimilation: special privileges for the 60% Malay race (all Moslems) continue to separate the Malaysian-Chinese, Indians and other ethnic groups.
Apart from national-type schools (all races), the 3 main races continue to school their youngsters in Malay, Chinese or Indian school. Political parties are also separated along racial lines - all of them actively engaging in commercial interests directly and indirectly.
Schools should never be all white, black, Christian or Islamic - their existence reflects how primitive and backward the culture of the people, even whites.

Shouldn't the onus be on Blacks and Asians to reach out to all-White/ traditional British schools in order to promote assimilation?

J.V., NYC,
Well said, I think separation of many communities is self imposed for a variety of reasons, assimilation is the key not multiculturalism or the resulting Balkanisation of Europe.
Also why are the natives here 'White' I find that PC term quite offensive we are English or at least European... I guess we are not allowed an ethnic group these days just a blank space..!
P, UK,
Who in their plain sanity would like to go or get their children into a closed all-white institution?
Run a study to check what is the background of those that in life are the most likely to get easily ripped off economically and emotionally, and are more prone to become victims of accidents and petty crimes outside their environment: those raised in aseptic environments with very little contact outside their own social level, race, religion and political conviction. Some of them grow to become the most boresome people one can crash into in a party.
That is the deal, you have the choice to grow your children as Amish but beware when they leave the farm.

Yet more freaky social engineering experiments from this government. Having encouraged immigration on an epic scale now they are attempting to deal with consequences of the breakdown in society which their policies have entailed.
Compulsory community cohesion ? Can we assume that Gordon Brown will want to levy fines ( tax ) any institutions which are unable to hit targets which will inevitably be imposed ?

"The Government is introducing a statutory duty on schools to promote community cohesion"
Given that even graduates hired recently by my company have problems telling the difference between "they're", "their" and "there", I think state schools ought to forget about "promoting community cohesion" (whatever that is) and perhaps concentrate on long-since abandoned practices, such as, er, teaching children to read and write.
