Members of a radical Muslim group that Tony Blair promised to ban after the July 7 bombings have set up two schools in Britain to educate primary age children.
The Islamic Shaksiyah Foundation, a registered charity that runs private schools in Haringey, north London, and in Slough in Berkshire, was established two years ago by female members of the extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
Between them, the schools educate more than 100 children. A 2005 Ofsted inspection report for the school in Slough was glowing about its work, stating: “The school’s provision for the pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is very good.”
The schools’ curriculum contains elements of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s ideology, which calls for the union of all Muslim states into a worldwide empire, the khilafah (caliphate).
Hundreds of Hizb ut-Tahrir supporters were gathering yesterday at the Alexandra Palace in north London for a conference on how to realise the khilafah. The group is also planning a global convention next Sunday for which it has booked a stadium with a capacity of 100,000 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The group has an estimated 2,000-4,000 active supporters in Britain and continues to operate openly despite Blair’s promise to proscribe it.
Although Hizb ut-Tahrir states it is nonviolent, the organisation has radicalised a number of British Muslims who have gone on to commit terrorist acts after leaving the group.
One is thought to be Omar Sharif, the Derby-born Muslim who tried to blow himself up outside a bar in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2003. His partner, Asif Hanif, killed three people in the suicide attack.
According to the Islamic Shaksiyah Foundation’s curriculum document, children aged 7-8 are taught “our rules and laws come from Allah” and asked to contrast Islam with “other belief systems where human beings make rules”. At age 9-10 children should be taught: “There must be one khali-fah [ruler of the caliphate].”
Tahir Alam, education spokesman at the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), said he had seen the khilafah being taught as a historical subject, but never as an ideological principle.
“I know a lot of schools up and down the country and I’ve never seen khilafah being taught [in this way] at any school,” said Alam. “We’re in Britain and we’re dealing with a curriculum that prepares you to be a citizen of this country so I don’t really see the relevance for why a school should have that scheme of work.”
The people running the schools, which opened about two years ago, have close links to some of Hizb ut-Tahrir’s most prominent members. Yusra Hamilton, proprietor of both schools and one of three members of the foundation’s board of trustees, has spoken at Hizb ut-Tahrir events and is the wife of Taji Mustapha, media spokesman for the organisation, whose name is Arabic for “party of Liberation”.
Farah Ahmed, head teacher of the ISF’s Slough school and author of its religious curriculum, is the sister-in-law of Majid Nawaz, a British member of the party who was jailed and allegedly tortured by the Egyptian authorities in 2002 for spreading Hizb ut-Tahrir literature.
The author of the school’s history curriculum, Themina Ahmed, has previously written for Hizb ut-Tahrir about her hatred of western society and desire to see it destroyed.
Ahmed wrote in the July 2001 issue of Khilafah Magazine: “The world will, insha-Allah [God willing], witness the death of the criminal capitalist nation of America and all other [infidel] states when the army of jihad is unleashed upon them.”
Anthony Glees, director of Brunel University’s centre for intelligence and security studies and author of a report on extremism on British campuses, warned: “This is a matter of grave concern. The government needs to take another look at proscribing Hizb ut-Tahrir.”
The party has operated in Britain since the mid-1980s but it is part of a much larger worldwide movement, founded in Palestine in 1953, that claims up to 10m supporters in 40 countries from Malaysia to Scandinavia.
It is banned in Germany, Russia and throughout the Middle East because of its antisemitism and its stated aim to establish a global Islamic state. It also calls for the destruction of Israel and the reunion of all lands that were ever under Muslim rule — including parts of southern Spain — through jihad if necessary.
Until a month after the July 7 bombings, when the group became far more cautious following Blair’s pledge, it was possible to obtain antisemitic literature on the group’s British websites. One leaflet stated: “The Jews are a poisoned dagger thrust into the heart of the Islamic [nation], an evil cancerous gland which spreads deep within the Islamic countries.” A short paragraph with the heading “What can Muslims in Britain do to reestablish the khilafah” went on to state that Muslims in Britain “should not become integrated into the corrupt western society and accept their diseased notions of democracy freedom and capitalism”.
Recently, it was claimed Hizb ut-Tahrir had tried to recruit one of the suspects in June’s alleged terrorist plot against targets in London and Glasgow.
One parent whose child had attended the Islamic Shaksiyah school in Haringey said most parents knew the teachers were from Hizb ut-Tahrir. Despite this parents enrolled their children because it was “very well run”.
The parent said that even though the school gave a rudimentary education in Hizb ut-Tahrir, children were not pressurised into joining the group. She said teachers often invited parents to Hizb ut-Tahrir events and discussions to try to recruit them.
Neither the foundation nor Hizb ut-Tahrir would reply to questions put to them. In a previous statement Hamilton has said the curriculum was a result of “comprehensive research” and denied that either school sought to propagate the views of Hizb ut-Tahrir.
The Home Office said the issue of whether to ban Hizb ut-Tahrir was under “constant review.
Fears that Bin Laden aide is recruiting in jail
A Muslim preacher once described as Osama Bin Laden’s “right-hand man in Europe” may be attempting to radicalise fellow prisoners at a Worcestershire jail, writes Robert Winnett.
The Prison Officers Association is worried because its members cannot understand what Abu Qatada is saying when he is seemingly praying in Long Lartin prison, where he is fighting expulsion from Britain. Abu Hamza, another radical preacher, is thought to be held at the same jail.
Steve Gough, the vice-chairman of the association, said: “People . . . who have the ability to radicalise and have got a proven track record to radicalise, need a new type of control that we’re not ready for and the government doesn’t appear to have put any thought into.”
The association is calling for interpreters to monitor about 320 terror-related inmates in British prisons.
Abu Qatada’s lawyer denied yesterday that he had been preaching to inmates.

If the school was inspected by Ofsted which I believe has no links with Hizb ut Tahrir or Al`Qaida (please correct me if I am wrong) or any other "terrorist organisation" is it not fair to say that they actually are teaching a curriculum which is acceptable?
Shiv Malik, please take some humble advice if in future you make reference to other articles please provide the context in which statements are made.
I find it surprising that many intelligent people from doctors, engineers, Neurosurgeons etc.. are susceptible to being brainwashed. You mentioned Omar sharif in your article, but did he not attend a well established independent private school mainly consisting of non-muslims surely he hadn`t been indoctrinated too!
abu usayd, Berks, UK
Sounds like the normal child abuse and indoctrination we have come to expect from the more devote religious. Maybe after a few more deaths we can start to build a society free from terror from religion.

Bill/Peggy,
No one is asking for an Islamic state in Europe, but in muslim countries where the people have tried dictatorship, monarchy and supposed democracy (where the entry criterias set down mean that it is a meaningless excercise to vote e.g. Pakistan, Egypt and the caucas regions, sometimes you only have one candidate). The reason for so many criteria is they know if they left it as a free fair election that many people would vote for Islamic Sharia (Algeria).
I accept that the Caliphate spreads dangerous ideas like
1.) make sure your neighbour doesn't go hungry (make poverty history), the way islam distributes wealth is different from capitalism and you aren't taxed on income but on wealth (not good for rich folk, but it might put a few more meals on poorer tables).
2.) Having an Accountable Leader in the state, (no muslim country can even spell the word). This would upset the new world order the US have created.
Muslims only want no interference from outside of country
Faisal, London,
Faisal, you are intergrating, there is nothing wrong with keeping your faith and nothing wrong with following it, while you allow others to do likewise with thier lifestyles, an admirable attitude.
as to the arguments for the caliphate, firstly there was never one islamic nation, even the ottomans were not the sole islamic nation, secondly the original caliphate had spearation of chuch and state, thirdly to blame israel as being one state but the muslims cannot have one is illogical, there are many muslim states.
Ben, folkestone, uk
To the islamists posting here:-
The greatest murderers of muslims are ..... other muslims!
Put your own house in order first and stop blaming every one else for the problems created by your own hand, like some errant infant throwing a tantrum. It is time you all grew up and took responsibility for zenophobic, mysogynist and genocidal tenets of your religion.
If it wasn't for the western enlightenment no one would have the luxury of being able to discuss these issues on this forum etc, etc. Everyone of you that makes an excuse or tries to blame the west for your problems sounds utterly hollow.
The Caliphate idea is a waste of time. The education and knowledge available from western civilization will defeat any idea of a global Caliphate. The idea is medieval and utterly laughable.
I don't buy it!
Bill, Glasgow,
What is wrong with a muslim state here? Well - this is Europe and we happend to believe in certain values such as democracy and freedom of speech (which by the way is used by some radical elements against democracy which would not be allowed in those countries some admire due to their religious rules). If you want a muslim state - fine by me but please somewhere where this is actually the religion. As much as some reject us telling them what to do, please refraime from telling us what we must beliefe. Everyone in a democracy has the choice to decide and move where their religious needs are being meet in a way some seem to desire....
There are good reasons which can be found in the European history why religion and state is separated here....
Peggy, Edinburgh,
Tony promised a lot of things to keep our minds occupied while Gordon picked our pockets - but surely no-on in their right mind believed him. Now we have Gordon doing his 'serious statesman' impression while not only trying to lift more stealth taxes but proposing to steal our saving as well. How on earth do you expect them to find time to worry about details like Hizb ut-Tahrir - till it all blows up!
Mike Bibby, St Albans, England -not EU
Shareef, you cannot compare the idea of the Caliphate with The EU or even Israel. Muslims who push for the Khilafah do not want 'a state', they want the entire world to be converted to Islam and live under Sharia law, forcibly if necessary. There are already several 'muslim' states in existence in which fundamentalist muslims can go and live if they wish, just as people of all religions and none who enjoy liberty and tolerance can come and live in the west.
Unfortunately the ideal of the khilafah is based on a romaticised and half imagined past where muslims were united under a caliphate; but any reading of Islamic history shows that this empire was just as prone to corruption, civil war and murder as any other. Modern attempts to recreate such a paradise have only resulted in socialogical nightmares like Iran and Afghanistan where people who do not agree with the ruling regime are mercilessly crushed.
Rob King, Norwich , UK
To Shareef, London, UK.
You can ask for a muslim state but there are over two dozen!!!
You can wish for a caliphate but i think you need to be polite and ask the rest of the world if it fits into our plans.
If not, then just get on with your life being obedient to mediaeval nonsense and just don't bother the rest of us with your superstitious twaddle.
Get over your religion for goodness sake. If you don't think we are religious enough for you then go to Iran or Saudi Arabia etc..........................
helen, london, uk
The UK give a group (who also run so called private schools) charitable status who have terrorist ambitions whos aims include persuading Muslims in Britain to not become integrated into the corrupt western society & accept their diseased notions of democracy freedom & capitalism & teach that their rules & laws come from Allah (not elected government) & that Islam should take over the western world by jihad (holy war). It just goes to show how out of touch & blind to reality the Ofsted Inspectors must be to have conducted an inspection & reported that the schools provision for the pupils spiritual, moral, social & cultural development is very good. The schools curriculum contains elements of Hizb ut-Tahrirs ideology, which calls for the union of all Muslim states into a worldwide empire. Hizb ut-Tahrir should be proscribed as a terrorist organisation & its schools shut down. Why does this country insist on kow-towing to ethnic minority groups who we know our out to hurt & extinguish us
Lynda Plum, London, england
They are a non Violent Political Party so where is the wrong in that?
Why when the Governments here and abroad are challenged intellectually and are exposed as corrupt establishments they go onto use their powers to close such organizations down.
Dont preach what you dont practice - you so called Democratic Parties!
Mike Dolan, London, United Kingdom
Why are Hizb ut Tahrir being persecuted? I have many colleagues at work who members of political parties (Lab, Con or Lib) but are also on the board of goveners at their kids schools. All these parties including Hizb are in the ideas business (hearts & minds).
Also, you can't hold someone responsible for an action that someone else commits. The people who left weren't radicalised by this group but rather found the group to be not radical enough(why blame Hizb). Are we going to hold the papers that have topless models in them responsible for introducing the rapist/peodo to pornography, I think not as we saw with the Chris Langham case.
I'm a Muslim and i'm not integrated, I get on very well with Non-Muslim colleagues and neighbours, but I stick to my Islamic principles, so I won't go to the pub and also need to pray, so when we organise events or play footy my mates accept this, but if they want a drink later they can.
Faisal, London,
So it is OK to ask for European unity but a crime for Muslims to ask for the same? It is OK for jews to have a state (Israel) but a crime when a Muslim wants one?
Shareef, London, UK
Muntasir 5050 shows the problem: an us-against-them victimhood grievance, built on Islamic values of tribal supremacism. We see this constantly, how Muslims accuse others of what they do: its both pathetic and laughable how they condemn the West, which is massively multicultural and tolerant with countries across Europe and states in the US with friendly relations, and even an accommodation and support for ethnic people, while Islam is mono cultural and associated with seperatist tensions and violence almost wherever you see it.
The point is, they don't want to join in with this. They want their mono cultural Islam, and twist it around accusing OTHERS of intolerance - what a joke!
Joe, Manchester,
it seems like Mr Shiv Malik dont want Muslims to be successful...remember his article on Muslims inflitrating top British Companies?
I suppose if it was the other way around he would have said that Muslims are unemployed, benifit eating parasites.
Maybe Mr Malik should become an ofsted inspector- he obviousely think he can do a better job than them.
AbdurRAhman, london,
Tony Blair promised the people of this country many, many things on which he failed to deliver; he just moved on to the next headline.
Gordon Blair professes he is cogniscent of courage as he writes books on the subject. If he truly has any courage himself he should despatch all adherents of radical muslim groups from this country to a place where they can set up the caliph again and where they might live their lives in a country they don't despise and revile. A country where they can enjoy their belief systems such as sharia law to their hearts' content. Would Saudi Arabia be suitable ?
Rick, Greater London, England
Lilly livered Blair ,
History will show this government has a lot to answer for in their stupid & dangerous politically correct attitude.
It's too late now for Brown to close this school, only if we have another atrocity will he be justified in doing so.
Sorry change that from , ' if ' to when !!
Maggie Millington, Brittany, France
The continued attempts to attribute Hizb ot Tahrir with the propogation of violence has become a thoroughly flawed and bogus strategy. If after 50 years of work in over 40 countries involving upto 10 million members not a single act of violence has been attributed to the work of this organisation, most sane people will judge that Hizb ut Tahrir cannot be advocating violence as a method for change.
Rather it is western governments that carry an ugly track record in using violence to engender regime change and to impose their political systems upon others, Iraq being the most recent example. Mr Malik should be calling for a change in British foreign policy and not the censorship of political organisations who hold a different view to secular parties.
salman, london, uk
Hizb Ut tahrir
working to unite Muslims under one state yes .. any issue with that ? is it because dividing The Ummah ) is convenient and unity is a Blow to ( western complex of Supremcy ) .. as once united; the Ummah will void the escuse for imposed paternalism over Muslims .?!
westerners say it is an utopia .. so let these poor peolple (utopize )
Further.. How pitty I feel for the one who hold a Brain that lead him to say this : Hizb ut tahrir is radicalizing the youth !
E s c u se meee ?? The youth; when they see that those who kill and rape muslims are either let go without ever brought to justice or ad best reprimended .. often rewarded ( Israel is getting more and more aid despite all what is doing including Nuking ammassments and WOMD ) ..
I mean ,, just one stop saying muslims radicalzing Youth Rather say .. they are being pushed by western agression ,, to become agressive .
wrell I do want khilafah , I Also invite u all 2 al islam
Muntasir 5050, toulkarem, palestine
When will our politicians wake up and close these places down and deport the extremists and any person muslim or otherwise who is not willing to integrate into British society.
Alan Mackay, ABERDEEN, Scotland
The continued attempts to attribute Hizb ot Tahrir with the propogation of violence has become a thoroughly flawed and bogus strategy that exposes the deception of Mr Malik's journalism. The statement that Tony Blair wanted to proscribe or disliked something does not automatically makes it wrong.
This is tantamount to saying that whatever he disliked is necessarily bad. That is absurd and shamefully subservient journalism.
And finally Mr malik what problem do you have if the muslims want to unite their lands? You will still be receiving your pension from both the governments that you work for.
Owais, London, UK
