A City banker received a suspended prison sentence yesterday for posing as an undergraduate to help a student to pass his examinations.
Jerome Drean, 34, “a genius” who has Asperger’s syndrome, was arrested at the University of York while using a false identity to impersonate Elnar Askerov, a 22-year-old Azerbaijani.
Drean, the French former head of European equity derivatives trading at Credit Suisse, was paid a total of £20,000 for sitting economics exams on behalf of Askerov, who was “not particularly bright academically”.
Both men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the university and each received a nine-month jail sentence at York Crown Court yesterday, suspended for two years.
Robert Smith, QC, for Drean, said that he had earned about £2 million over three years through his work in the City. He was “a genius”, yet his Asperger’s disorder made him act sometimes in socially unacceptable ways, Mr Smith said. He said that Drean had destroyed his career as a result of his criminal conviction.
Alexander Cameron, QC, for Askerov, said that he had felt under pressure from his family to achieve.
Both men, from London, were ordered to undertake a minimum of 300 hours of unpaid work and to pay costs of £1,300 each. Drean was also ordered to repay £16,000. He has already repaid £4,000.

I'm glad they didn't go to jail--seems like overkill for something like this. But as far as Asperger's is concerned, seemed like he had enough social know-how to handle a big banker's job, which isn't all math & numbers, I wouldn't think, at that level--he would have had to have a lot of social knowledge. And cheating isn't just a social faux pas, it's cheating! So I'm not sure where the AS comes in and why it was even brought up, as this kind of thing is liable to make people who don't know much about Asperger's think people with AS are untrustworthy. I suppose that bank will never hire another Aspie again after this. I think he should have left AS out of it.
There's nothing about Asperger's that predisposes someone to cheat. If, as Jane Fleming says in her comment, a lot of others do this, what are their excuses?

Most of my friends completed Economics courses at York, some even manageing to pass off their efforts through gaining a BSc... I always wondered how they did it....
Justin, London,
Even though it's a suspended sentence, I still find it rather harsh to even consider a jail term for such a minor misdemeanour.
I'm quite certain that there are many people walking our streets that have committed violent crimes - they surely have to be a more pressing concern? It isn't like we have plenty of room in our prisons.
More importantly, I think greater compassion and understanding should be forthcoming vis-a-vis somebody with Asperger's Syndrome, which is an autistic disorder. But I'm not surprised that it wasn't taken into account, given our hypocritical societal attitudes towards sufferers of disorders we cannot visibly see, and therefore do not fully understand.
It would be disgusting if such an apparently great mind lost his career over this. He's paying for his "crime", and that should be the end of the matter. Like I said, there are many worse things he could have done.
Mark G, Cardiff,
Sounds like he would do anything for money! Strange that he works in the City isn't it?
Michael, London,
Unfortunate for both cheats. This is not uncommon - external students who only attend for sessional exams can find a "friend" to take their exam. This happens with driving tests too.
