An independent public inquiry is to be held into the supply to haemophiliacs of contaminated NHS blood
The Labour peer Lord Archer of Sandwell, a former Solicitor-General, is to conduct the inquiry after a campaign by Lord Morris of Manchester, president of the Haemophilia Society and a former Minister for the Disabled, who said that 1,757 haemophilia patients who were exposed to HIV and/or hepatitis C-contaminated NHS blood and blood products had died since being infected. “Many more are now terminally ill,” the peer claimed.
Lord Morris said that, of 4,670 such patients exposed to hepatitis C, 1,243 were also exposed to HIV and that, notwithstanding improvements in treatments, only 2,552 patients with hepatitis C and 361 with HIV were still alive. The situation has been described by Professor Lord Winston as “the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS”.

I am the mother of a Haemopiliac son and a sister sadley my brother passed away 9yrs ago with HIV and Hepatitus, my son also was given infected blood products, and is has HIV and Hepatitus .to hear you have siged for your child to be used as a chimpanzie is beyond anything it was painfull when we first knew about the viruses but now i feel numb .We have lived through so much no one could ever understand the pain and heart break we have lived through. it was hard to watch your child in pain and to able to have this new factor V111 that would give them a better life to be able to do more , it just gave my son and brother no life,For many years there was talk of all not being so, now perhaps we shall hear the truth, it should never have happened ,as parents we should have been told so we had a choice we would never have allowed this to happen tp our children, brothres, husbands, farthers, all those we love and hold close in our hearts.

Unfortunatly I am one of the many heamophiliacs who was "gifted", hep c via the N.H.S. I am just starting a one year coarse of weekly Interferon injections that will give me a 50/50 chance of a cure. This drug has very unpleasant side effects which are hard to conceal from my family and children. I am lucky, my brother who died 10 years ago of H.I.V. via the same route,is not. I am not bitter, I just want the truth.

Leslie Dowing was a true witty happy man with everthing to live for ,even with Heamophilia, factor 8 was the new product but in Febuary 1989 at the age of 47 , the NHS killed him, they promised him a better way of life and better hope for the future. Why was this blood never screened in America or even in Britain ? or was it . surley they would not have given infected blood ? But they did, utter negligence.
What the hell happened we need to know .

this is very bad what happend, i am young and a member of the family has it, it has destoyed so many lifes and is so hard for us as family members. how did it happen, why. they ruin all these peoples lifes and their familes like my family, one day we will get justice, i will campaign. this disease would not be wished on anyone and its about time the government paid compensation not pennies. how about another life for free thats not ruined by carelessness, this is fair compensation.

I am so pleased to hear that there is going to be an enquiry into the case of the haemophiliacs given infected blood products. I am the mother of a haemophiliac who contracted HIV and hepatitus from infected Factor V111 and passed away ten years ago at the age of 24. This has been a heartbreaking event for everyone involved and it hopefully help everyone to have events brought out into the open instead of being swept under the carpet as it has been for over 20 years, This did not only have an effect on the haemophiliacs but also ruined the lives of their families. No one has ever explained to us how and why this happened or appeared to understand the stress and suffering that was inflicted on parent's and siblings. This is something that should never have happened .
Mrs Brenda Haddock, Birmingham, England
This is great news, i am so pleased. maybe now we can all find some kind of closure as to why we were infected. Also why the NHS continued to use blood products when they knew they were contaminated with viruses.
