WESTMINSTER Urgent action is needed to rescue the £12 billion programme for upgrading the NHS computer system, the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Commons has said.
Over budget and behind schedule, the National Programme for IT is “not looking good”, according to a report from the committee.
Edward Leigh, the Conservative MP who chairs the committee, said: “Urgent remedial action is needed if the long-term interests of NHS patients and taxpayers are to be protected.
“The electronic patient clinical record, which is central to the project, is already running two years late; the suppliers are struggling to deliver; and, four years down the line, the costs and benefits for the local NHS are unclear.”
Ministers said that the criticisms were out of date and that the costs of the programme had not escalated.

After working in the public sector as a clerical officer and having sat on a board for the introduction of the electronic social care record project, I came to the conclusion that the core users of the proposed systems just did not have I. T. skills to use what was on offer. I voiced this on the board and was told that I would only need to sit on the board as and when required. Needless to say I did not get asked to sit on another board meeting.
It is not the I T systems on offer so much as the poor training of the users that is the problem. In short the I T literacy was too low for a too ambitious a program of changes.

Could this be the same system that the Government denied had a problem just a couple of weeks ago? Or the same one that a leaked comment from an employee at one of the companies supposedly developing the system, said , would not succeed, (sometime before Christmas I think). How many clues have this stupid lot had to be given? And how many more million have they wasted because of it? If this Government told the truth, much like the pensions heist and the sell off of the country's gold, they would admit that they ignored good advice in the first place.

so whats new? This is a typical newlab project and they all fall flat on their face, after they've cost us a lot of money that is.

This is no surprise, it's been obvious for a long time that all is not well with the programme. There are two quotes in your article worth commenting on............
"the costs and benefits for the local NHS are unclear
Well then cancel the programme and save any further useless expenditure
"criticisms were out of date and that the costs of the programme had not escalated"
Why should we believe what Minister's say? They wouldn't admit to having made a mistake at any cost.
