Family doctors got a 23 per cent earnings increase as a result of their new contract, putting the average GP on just over £100,000.
The figures, released yesterday by the Information Centre for Health and Social Care, are lower than those claimed by the Government, which attempted to blame the big increases for NHS deficits, even though it had been a party to the contract that led to the rises. The Government had claimed that the increase was 30 per cent.
GPs were outraged by the way the figures were presented by Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary. The correct figures were lower and already out of date, said Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the British Medical Association’s GPs’ committee. He said the Government’s figures included employers’ pension contribution, averaging £6,234, which was not in the latest figures.

Health professionals (particulrly doctors) will give a quality service, within the framework provided, because they are conscientious and are vocationally driven.
Dangling financial carrots and piece rates (e.g. QOF points) are unecessary and insulting. They only patronise the good doctors, and distract any bad ones.

GP's are self-employed businesses that have the NHS as a customer - why is the government paying their pensions as if they were employees?
Yet another medical scam?
