The number of people affected by diabetes is growing at such an alarming rate, a report states, that it threatens to overwhelm the health service.
An estimated three million Britons now suffer from diabetes and the equivalent of 2,000 cases a week were identified last year.
Diabetes-related illness already accounts for £1 in every £10 spent by the health service and current goals for diabetes care will not be met without more government investment, a group of healthcare experts says.
Their report, published yesterday at the Houses of Parliament, states that Type 2 diabetes, which is related to obesity, now accounts for 85 per cent of sufferers. It is preventable, and effective treatment can reduce the risk of health complications by half. However, it said, a climate of central targets and financial cost-cutting in the NHS had threatened services to care for people with the chronic disease.

I have had type 1 diabetes since 1988 and like all diabetics
I receive free eye tests and presriptions for diabetes and non diabetic related issues. im not complaining, but with more and people devoloping diabetes, no wonder the NHS is under strain. I can not understand why money is poured into research for insulin stomach pumps, insulin nasal sprays, etc etc If medical companies were to use all rescources on finding a complete cure this would take an imense financial burden off the NHS.
Jon, London,
Some blame obesity and some blame sugar or low carbohydrate diet or high carbohydrate diet others blame who knows what.
We cant discovery real cause of diabetes because we are prone to pretend to know what cause diabetes.
In reality we dont have idea what cause diabetes and why incidence of diabetes are in such increase.
Luke, London, UK
Dont just balame it on obesity. Both my brother and I developed type 2 diabetes in our mid fiities and I would not say either of us was obese. Neither has there been a family history of dabetes. What I have noticed since in trying to keep sugar out of the diet, is how much of our food is overloaded in sugar these days. From a simple plate of cornflakes to a fruit juice, they all contain sugar, it is very difficult to find food that has not got added sugar. I believe this epedemic, which it is, can be directly tracked backed to the food industry and the food we eat these days. Both Government and industry has a lot to answer for by allowing this to happen.
