A WOMAN is set to become the most prolific surrogate mother in Britain by carrying another couple’s baby for the eighth time.
The record-breaking surrogacy is controversial because the woman suffers from clinical depression and has previously attempted suicide. Even her family believe the psychological strain of carrying so many babies for other couples has damaged her mental health.
Jill Hawkins, 43, who has no children of her own, has been paid to have babies for the past 16 years. She had said her days as a surrogate mother were over after she gave birth to her last baby, Isobel, in 2006. But Hawkins said she later felt “broody” and missed being pregnant so decided to have another baby, even though she would not keep the infant.
She wants to provide the child as a sister or brother for a family for whom she has already carried a baby. Twins that Hawkins was having for the couple died recently, nine weeks into the pregnancy, but she intends to try again.
Hawkins insisted her depression had been caused by low self-esteem over her weight and not the emotional roller-coaster of her multiple surrogate pregnancies.
She said: “I was feeling particularly broody at the time and so offered to complete their family. I just wish I was 10 years younger so that I could fit more in. I really love being pregnant.”
This weekend the case caused alarm among politicians, who said the government had to act to control the unregulated trade, in which an estimated 100 surrogate babies are born each year. When the practice started in 1985 there were no more than a handful.
Phil Willis, chairman of the committee that scrutinised the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill, said: “We have to make sure women are not psychologically damaged as a result of surrogacy and that the practice is not open to profiteering.”

K Tyson - there is no suggestion that the surrogate has any biological link to the children so why would the children also suffer from mental illness?
linda, london,
FM from Glasgow, try telling a woman who is unable to have a child of her own, who has been turned down by adoption agencies, and has had numerous failed IVF attempts over many many years....that she wouldn't love a surrogate child.
K Tyson - having had first hand experience of the COTS organisation, I can absolutely assure you that there is noone taking advantage of anyone. It is a mutually agreed contracted agreement working within very strict guidelines.
"and their children most likely to suffer from mental illness"
Really?!
Would you care to back that statement up with some evidence?!

FM - That has got to be one of the dumbest statements I have ever heard!
By your logic a father could not love a child!

There are loads of people in this country who are 'depressed' for what ever their reason's are. Being over weight, being too thin, not good loking enough, not being secure money wise. Loads of reasons. Cots do a good job of 'trying' to be sure their surrogates are supported and that they have been passed medically to be able to continue being surrogates if that is what they so wish. Her doctor knows she is taking tablets for depression and still being a surrogate, so must have approved otherwise she wouldnt be given the tablets still? Those who critise do so becasue they have had no problems having their own children and so due to this, dont see why those who do, should go to such lengths to have their own. I feel this is wrong as these people try and control what others can and can't do. Their the selfish ones, not those trying to help these couples.

Perhaps it is the other way around. She has a mental illness that has led her to be the "most prolific surrogate mother". These couples are taking advantage of her and their children most likely will suffer from mental illness.
And FM...that is silly.

Can mothers truely love thier children without having the childbirth? The time when raising a baby until he or she grows up is not a lovely time but a so hard period for parents. The pain pregnants experiences would help the many strugggles when they faced many struggles.
