NIPPING out for a quick smoke is about to become even quicker. Philip Morris, the tobacco giant, is planning a “snack-size” cigarette for the smoking-ban age.
The compact cigarette will be shorter than existing brands but just as smoky: it will deliver the same potency while taking less time to puff.
Marlboro Intense is designed to appeal to employees who are forced to take quick outdoor cigarette breaks while at work, often in cold weather.
Philip Morris will test the cigarette in Turkey but believes it has worldwide potential, with more than 50 countries now having bans on smoking in public places.
The cigarette, which is 7.2cm long, compared with the normal 8.5cm, may offer some solace to smokers who face an even colder trip for their breaks if MEPs have their way.
Last week, as part of the battle to combat climate change, MEPs demanded a ban on patio heaters, which many outdoor smokers rely on for warmth at work or while socialising.
Stephen Pound, the MP who voted against the ban and then stopped smoking the next day, said: “The desperation of the smokers knows no limits; it’s only matched by the desperation in Philip Morris trying to corner the market.”
A spokesman for Forest, the pro-smoking lobby group, said: “The real pity is that smokers have to be rushed at all because people enjoy the sensation of having a cigarette.”

I fully approve. The world is overpopulated, and what better way to control it than smoking? Not to mention all the taxes the government gets from smokers and all the scientific endevour dedicated to finding cures for cancer (esp. lung cancer). Phillip Morris, you are saving our planet!

Ah, so Darwin was right all along?
I don't care if they make cigarettes that let people kill themselves faster. What bothers me is paying taxes that support others' healthcare.
Michael, Houston, Texas
I smoked for 20 years... starting was the most stupid thing I've ever done. The first period was justified as "being cool", second period (lasting 19.5 years) was a struggle to keep the nicotine levels up in order to stay focused... the last period was a struggle to get rid of the addiction. Being a smoker is nothing else than being a Junkie Lite.

These have been on sale in alaska for more than 2 yrs. They are called 72's. It takes less than 4 mins. to smoke one. No complaints from me when it's 30 below zero F

No doubt the EU will ban cigarettes shorter than 8.5cm long in order to scupper such insolence.
Be good debt slaves and get back to work. You've got to earn more money for us good ethical corporations

Insane idea, less than a 1cm difference and double the strength! Come on people, if you were not killing yourselves fast enough before then you will be doing it now. Double strength! so basically a 20-a-day habit will become equivlant to double that and if your stressed then you have more breaks - see the light people...give up!
Mike'ee, London,
It is only matched by the desperation of the Anti-Smoking Organisations and the Government (who know that it is now Internationally recognised that SHS does not kill) to justify their draconian and socially divisive smoking bans.
Eddie , Edinburgh, Scotland
What a great idea - now we can get in two cigarettes in a smoke break instead of only one !!!!!
P Barrett, Valletta, Malta
Forest is wrong to say that people "enjoy the sensation of having a cigarette". When I used to smoke up to 60 cigarettes a day I only enjoyed a very few of them. Gratifying an addiction seldom gives pleasure but it frequently stops you feeling the misery of deprivation. Quite a different story.
