Q I have lichen planus, which is irritating my mouth. Can you recommend any treatment or homeopathic remedy?

A Lichen planus is an itchy rash of unknown cause that can appear anywhere on the body and affects about one in 50 people, usually between the ages of 30 and 60. It is not infectious.

It often causes white streaks in the mouth and sometimes painful mouth ulcers. Most cases clear within two years but steroid lozenges or mouthwashes prescribed by your doctor can help. Homeopathy will do no harm but there is no evidence it will speed up recovery.

Q Two years ago I suffered an epididymitis infection that was cleared up with antibiotics. I have, however, been left with residual discomfort, made worse by sitting for long periods. My specialist says long-term use of ibuprofen with codeine, antidepressants, or surgery are my only options. But what about acupuncture?

A Epididymitis is inflammation of the epididymis – the coiled tube attached to the upper part of each testicle where sperm mature. The cause is usually a bacterial infection and antibiotics are prescribed to treat this.

Discomfort can last for a long time afterwards. If you prefer not to take regular medication, such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory tablets or low-dose antidepressants (which are sometimes prescribed for pain management), then acupuncture can help. A See your GP now. It sounds like you developed acne vulgaris when younger and are still suffering from it, rather than acne rosacea, a more common form in adults, whose symptoms are redness and flushing.
