John Parsons, consultant gynaecologist in the teenage pregnancy hotspot of Lambeth, southeast London, has lost track of the number of terminations he has carried out among girls, some as young as 12.
One girl of that age came to him recently seeking an abortion in the 20th week of her pregnancy. “I was gobsmacked,” said Dr Parsons, lead clinician for the termination of pregnancy service at King’s College Hospital. “She said she hadn’t realised she was pregnant until shortly before coming to me, but I imagine she had gone into a degree of denial. Which 12-year-old wouldn’t?”
There are widespread variations in the rate of abortions provided to young girls across England and Wales, the latest figures show.
While the average rate is 19.8 per 1,000 girls in the under 16 age group, parts of South London reach more than double that, with Southwark reporting 47 abortions per 1,000, Lambeth 44 and Lewisham 40.
Last week Dr Parsons dealt with appointments at the new Camberwell Sexual Health Centre, one of three clinics that provide advice on terminations, family planning and sexually transmitted infections.
In the space of one day he carried out terminations for nine women. “That is about normal for a single day,” he said.
“The girls I worry about are the ones who don’t come to us, and go on to have the baby. It is not in the interests of any child to have a 16-year-old mother. Being born unwanted to a teenage mother is no way to start life.
“These women are being motivated not to mess up their lives. There is a lot of satisfaction in that.”

Mopsy Berg, Dundee:"How does it benefit any child to be born to a mother who is hardly out of GCSEs, Mr Lorriman?"
Then they should be abolished. Adulthood begins with sexual maturity, and not 18 which is an arbitrary age. Our young adults should work in the community, not learning useless facts.
Greg Lorriman, Leatherhead, UK
A few weeks ago a large number of MPs voted for legislation that would have given that 12 year old no choice but to continue her pregnancy.....
Alison, London,
The trouble with Sex Education is that there is evidence that it results in younger Sex with slightly more contraception. As it is delivered in a non-judgmental way , it is a form of permission giving.
In Family Planning Clinics the ethos is similar ; well done on being responsible and coming here.

How does it benefit any child to be born to a mother who is hardly out of GCSEs, Mr Lorriman?
Mopsy Berg, Dundee,
It is only in our gross inversion of nature that someone can say that it is bad to be a mother at 16. This is to confuse adulthood, which anyone able to have children has already entered in to, with maturity.
Nature has fitted us for children from around 13 years old: we should listen to her.
Greg Lorriman, Leatherhead, UK
i have to agree with Dan's post above. thats not a good enough excuse. however that's not to say that abortion should be scrapped.
there are ways a 16 year old mother can raise a child successfully, and there are those that aren't.
i don't agree with abortion but it shouldn't be banned
Deno, Preston,
"It is not in the interests of any child to have a 16-year-old mother"
Are you saying the lives of people born to 16-year old mothers are not worth living? Certainly having a teenage mother may not be ideal in circumstabce, but its hardly a justification to sentence thousands of humans to oblivion.
Dan, Oxford, Oxfordshire
Dr Parsons is absolutely right. However, it is not just sex education that needs to be improved, but family life. With family breakdown, multiple casual relationships at a young age portrayed as OK in the media and on TV, what chance do our vulnerable young people have. Where's the moral guidance.
