Graphic pictures of throat cancer, rotting lungs and teeth and a corpse in a morgue will appear on the back of cigarette packets from next month, the Department of Health said.
The images will appear alongside the familiar written warnings such as “Smoking Kills”. The Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, said: “Written health warnings have encouraged many smokers to stop smoking. These new stark picture warnings emphasise the harsh health realities of continuing to smoke. I hope they will make many more think hard about giving up.”

If all the rubbish printed was 100% true and not laced with the words 'can' or 'may' it might be taken seriously! They can't do that though can they? Let's have diseased livers on booze bottles or rotten teeth on sweet packets! Crash victims on car stickers etc etc etc
Claire, Workington, England
Smokers already know the dangers without having to see graphic illustrations. However if they choose not to be persuaded that is their choice but isn't it strange that they should then expect health care for their own deliberate self harm? Better to raise the price of tobacco products.
Shirley Anne, Southport, UK
Ever since the smoking ban (which was based on very dubious evidence, and is going to be looked at again in pubs by the Tories) smokers are fed up of being harangued, especially by the nanny-knows-best government. All these pictures will do is make smokers feel more victimised, & less likely to stop

Would The Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, please make public for view the results of malpractice committed on patients? I mean ,well why be so one sided?
Has photos of high speed crashes stoped the sales of high performance cars? No!

And pictures of rotten livers on whisky bottles, heart bi pass ops on butter, and more currently a picture of bailiffs evicting a family on morgage application forms.
I also use a cigarette case by the way.
John Smith, London, UK
How typical of this prissy PC country. If Donaldson really wishes to cause offence, he has done so to this non-smoker.
Alex, forres, uk
The DoH claims that the UK will be the 1st country in the EU is wrong. I am in Bucharest and am looking at the same picture of diseased lungs that will appear in the UK on my Romanian produced pack of Camel Lights.
I can also confirm these pictures have not persuaded me to give up.
Edwin, Bucharest,
If it wasn't because they need the tax, they would just ban the bloody things!
The images are an expensive way of doing nothing, they will have little or no effect.
Jonathan, Wiesbaden,
Good to see this newspaper is the only one I've found to allow readers comments on this story.
I've just ordered a cigarette case (remember those?) online, I suggest other smokers do likewise.
Dougie, Glasgow, Scotland, U.K.
Typical Labour" They'll have checked the surveys and know this will do little to stop smoking,. maybe a % point or two, the kids are stopping anyway, so Darling is seeing how far they can go with the EU directive to "discourage" smokers, before it hits the tax revenue, at which point they'll stop
George Edwards, Beijing, China
these adverts won,t change smokers habits or make people give it up there are 18million smokers in the uk who are fast becoming the most persicuted in the country for doing something that is perfectly legal and come election time the persicuted will push back
brian rice, halifax, ENGLAND
It won't change much if anything and I would be surprised if the warnings have encouraged people to stop. Everyone knows the risk. If you stop new smokers starting, however, that would be a good start.
