Britain’s most successful fertility doctor was yesterday cleared of allegations made by two patients after disciplinary proceedings against him collapsed.
Mohamed Taranissi was accused of failing to keep proper medical records, applying inappropriate pressure on one patient and displaying insensitivity to another.
But a General Medical Council (GMC) fitness to practise panel ruled that allegations against Mr Taranissi, who runs the London-based Assisted Reproduction and Gynaecology Centre, did not amount to misconduct.
Mr Taranissi had been accused of running a “money grabbing operation” where a patient was used as a guinea pig for a controversial experimental treatment.
One woman, now 41, claimed that she was “psychologically blackmailed” by doctors at the clinic into paying £900 for an unproven blood test.
But the panel found that there was insufficient evidence to show that Mr Taranissi’s behaviour amounted to “inappropriate pressure”.
It also found that there was not enough evidence to suggest that she was not properly informed about treatment for infertility with an unlicensed drug.
A second patient said that she had two seizures and became unconscious just hours after leaving his clinic She was admitted to intensive care suffering life-threatening seizures caused by drinking too much water in preparation for her IVF treatment.
She was suffering from hyponatraemia, a rare condition in which sodium levels in the blood fall to dangerously low levels.
Her husband said that when he phoned Mr Taranissi he was defensive, insensitive and showed a lack of compassion.
But the panel found that Mr Taranissi could not have been expected to diagnose the rare condition. And it said that a defensive attitude was to be expected.
Mr Taranissi, 53, strenuously denied any wrongdoing. A petition signed by 92 of his patients was handed to the GMC opposing the case against him.
