When the early 19th-century scientist Thomas Malthus contemplated ways of reducing the population before it outstripped the food supply, he considered infanticide, murder, contraception, starving the poor and homosexuality. The latter has been harnessed by present-day scientists to halt an explosion, not of people, but of brown-tailed moths.
Moths and their larvae have multiplied in such numbers in some parts of the country recently that they have become a menace to people. Experts have come up with the novel solution of tricking the males of the species into thinking that they are gay.
Scientists are using a powder that spreads female pheromones the smell of sexual attraction and confuses the male moths, thus slowing the breeding. The powder is left near breeding grounds and, when larvae hatch, they are coated in it. Other male moths are then tempted naturally to make contact with them, believing them to be female. Moths have small brains and dreadful eyesight.
Andrew Gibson of the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust said: “We have never had these creatures in such numbers before. The pheromones have no significant effect on the other species of moths and butterflies in the area. They are species-specific and are doing the job.”
Trouble began at Spurn Point on the Humber estuary, home to Britain’s only full-time lifeboat station, where seven crewmen and their families live. The moths had multiplied in such numbers that the men were developing rashes and breathing problems from the poisonous hairs of the larvae blown in the wind.
The caterpillars are a rare visitor to Yorkshire from southern England. Hot weather in April, now a distant memory, is believed to have caused the explosion in their numbers, leading them to set up a breeding colony at Spurn Point, a nature reserve.
Brown-tailed moths are a well-known nuisance in summer as their voracious appetite can strip an area of its greenery. If the caterpillar hairs are touched they can cause a skin irritation. Each female moth lays between 200 and 300 eggs on the leaves of trees and shrubs in late summer. Small caterpillars hatch and start to feed on the leaves. To survive the winter they spin a white tent around themselves, until in spring they scatter and feed frantically until they are between 2½cm and 5cm (12in) long.
Towards the end of summer they moult, pupate and emerge as adult moths. To confuse the issue they are not brown-tailed at all but, like some of Sir Elton John’s more restrained stage costumes, predominantly white.
Many local councils recognise the menace of the brown-tailed moth and will send their pest-control officers to deal with them. Forcing the creatures into civil partnerships, however, is a new way of dealing with their population explosion. It appears more effective than trying to starve their poor.

I am gay, but I don't want to have sex with female moths.
Therefore I have proved that this experiment hasn't worked.
Andy Williams, Cardiff, Wales
Yet another example of humanity playing God with nature's fluctuations. Pretty soon, Brown-tailed moths will be on the endangered species list due to disrupted breeding patterns. Why don't we just leave things alone?
JB, CHaldon, UK
There are plenty of examples of homosexual tendencies in nature. I think MR's problem with the article is more to do with his subconscious and deep seated hatred of homosexuals rather than any scientific analysis of the article. The article just goes to show that homosexuality can be a blessing rather than a curse. Perhaps they can promote homosexuals in human society to combat our population growth problems.
Simon Margan, Epping, Australia / NSW
Homosexual (gay) defnition:Of, relating to, or having a sexual orientation to members of one's own sex.
Just because the moth thinks that it is a girl doesn't make it any less gay. If a man has sex with a transexual believing them to be a woman then they are engaged in a homosexual act, pretending that it is a woman doesn't change the fact they are having or attempting to have sex with a man, and therefore gay.
William Thomson, London, England
The moths aren't really gay. They still like females, and they think they are getting females. They're just too small-brained to tell the difference!
Jessica, Los Angeles,
How much do you think has to be psychologically wrong with someone when they concern themselves with the socio-political implications of the inherent or altered sexuality of a LESSER INSECT. I for one like to think that humans are a little more complicated than moths, especially when it comes to an issue so fluid and controversial as imutable sexuality.
Blair Whitstaff, Canberra, A.C.T
Oddly enough, I recall Eddie Murphy running into a similar problem.
JT, Port Huron, Michigan
unbelievable! what on Earth are these people thinking of! Thank goodness they aren't doing this sort of thing to Humans.....I want to be the only Gay in the Village!!
RJ, Manchester ,
They are forcing male moths to become trannies.
Obviously this must be caused by climate change.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Tricking a male into having sex with another male by making it think that it's a female is not, I repeat not making the male gay.
It's simple male wants to have sex with a female is not gay even if he has sex with another male.
Ralph, Oxford, UK
The article makes an interesting point about gay behaviour in a species with too high a population. Considering the human population explosion we should be encouraging people to become gay and rewarding them for same sex marriages.
Kailassa, Ferntree Gully,
My problem with this article is that the headline is misleading. The moths are not 'gay'. They're attracted to other male moths because they are presented as females. The moths are still heterosexual.
Scott, Boston, United States
Unbelievably irresponsible title !!
The moths are not even close to being "persuaded to be gay."
These male moths are tricked to have sex with other male moths by convincing them they are having sex with female moths.
The title to this article is inaccurate and may mislead people to believe that the moths can be made gay.
MR, Long Island, NY
Is this the same "Gay powder" they have been sprinkling over BBC childrens TV presenters for years? If so, it will be extremely effective!
