SPACE Venus used to be much like Earth and could have harboured life until runaway global warming dried out the planet.
Readings from the Venus Express space probe convinced scientists that the planets were once more similar than realised.
The findings were announced at the European Space Agency in Paris and published in the journal Nature.

Runaway global warming is underestimated in current climate models because melting methane hydrate emissions from permafrost and ocean are unknown and therefore not included. Furthermore, ecosystem collapse is underestimated too partially because of the failure to consider feedbacks. This is the sixth extinction, and most of the other ones were caused by warming. 55 million years ago, in the most recent extinction, volcanic activity caused a chain reaction of runaway global warming. Our emissions are 30 times greater rate, so the chain reaction will be triggered sooner, unfold faster, and therefore be much more severe. When we return to the hothouse climate of 55 million years ago, most life will die. The climate is more sensitive to CO2 increases that was previous known due to feedbacks. Doubling the CO2 is 3C shorterm, but 6C longterm due to feedbacks!

Just out of curiosity, has anyone who has commented actually read the article in Nature?
Joe, Tulsa, Oklahoma
It looks as if a committee got together to produce a press release to make the Venus mission more "trendy" by including the magic words "global warming".
Venus gets four times as much sunlight as earth. Even with an ordinary earth-like atmosphere, this would make one huge difference.
William McIlhagga, Ilkley,
Hi Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
Yep, got me. Factor of 2 isn't it? I was thinking entire lifespan for some reason.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
To Patrick, Oxford and Bill, Frome.
Careful guys your prejudice against females and men who use hairspray is showing. Perhaps you are jealous that they have hair to spray!
To Dom, Fitzgerald
Careful you envy and prejudice to the USA is showing.
Have a nice day :-)
evienita, Charlotte, usa
Hi Scott, Durham,NC: Yes, you would have thought that if these scientists were brainy enough to get a probe to Venus and get some info' back to analyse that they would have been aware enough to realise that Venus is a bit closer to the Sun than the Earth and factored that into their calculations really wouldn't you. Mind you, after that episode of all of us believing the "experts" when they said that Iraq had WOMD I think you might just have a good point.
Cirep G Nol, London,
Well said Scott. Except it's 5.5 billion years for the red giant stage I believe. Still, not to worry though.
As you say Venus is far too near the sun to ever have been remotely earth-like. The 'runaway global warming' was caused entirely by the sun which is also the cause of any 'global warming' here.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
Typical yank thinking !
Dom Fitzgerald, Bordeaux,
Yeah right - it was humans who did it, then we escaped to earth. Why are we wasting EU money on these 'scientists'.
I forgot - it's what the EU is good at.
Scott - fully agree with you.
Prav, London,
Must have been all that hairspray
Bill, Frome, UK
Women are from Venus aren't they? Does this mean they've brought their golbal warming habits here too?? Finally here's some scientific evidence that lets us men off the hook for climate change.
Patrick, Oxford, England
Give it a break. Venus is a bit closer to the Sun so I don't think the analogy is apt. When the sun eventually turns into a Red Giant, in 11 billion years, then perhaps the Earth will experience a bit of catastrophic "runaway" global warming.
Unill then, I'm not worrying.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
