UNHAPPY couples used to stick together for the sake of the kids. Now they can make the best of a bad marriage in the name of being environmentally friendly.
Scientists have quantified for the first time the extent to which divorce damages the environment. The researchers found that the combined use of electricity across the two new households created rose 53% while water use was up by 42%.
Across America – one of 12 countries studied – divorced households used 73 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in 2005 that could have been saved if the families had not split up. That is equivalent to about a fifth of Britain’s consumption.
Broken couples also increase demand for housebuilding and infrastructure such as new roads. “The global trend of soaring divorce rates has created more households with fewer people, has taken up more space and has gobbled up more energy and water,” said Jianguo Liu of Michigan University, who carried out the latest research.
The study, to be published tomorrow in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the average number of rooms per household was between 33% and 95% higher for divorced couples than for married ones.
Liu also calculated that America now has an extra 38.5m rooms in houses and apartments built to meet the demand for more accommodation generated by divorce over the past three decades.
The growth of single-person households is also damaging the environment. Research published in the journal Environment, Development and Sustainability found that:
- One-person households are the biggest consumers of energy, land and household goods, such as washing machines, refrigerators, TVs and stereos, per capita
- They consume 38% more products, 42% more packaging, 55% more electricity and 61% more gas per capita than four-person households
- People living alone create 1½ tons of waste annually compared with a ton by those in households of four or more

Average consumer spending in 2004 was $ 8,214.3 Billion. Women accounted for more than 70 percent of this. Total military expenditure in 2004 was $ 580 Billion. If a mere 5 percent of the consumer spending of women would have been spent on sustainable energy, the USA would have been the absolute leader in reversing global warming. But thatâs not happening. The divorce industry makes women even bigger spenders and men obedient labourers and suppliers of the cash for women. Shut up or else. No wonder this system is going out of control.
Ivo Vos, Dodewaard,
It is evident that "global warming" is caused by people. In the
60's and70's, the enviromentalist claim was that a 'population explosion', would destroy the earth and cause wide spread starvation as there would not be enough farm land to raise food for the masses. To reduce the population, we pushed
birth control, abortion, abolished ddt, started aids epodemic,
and now will starve many millions by burning food in our cars.
Enviromentalist will now do their part to limit population growth through the religion of 'global warming'.
Wesley Hoogerhyde, Kokomo,
It would take a real dunce to suggest that the current unilateral no-fault divorce laws are constitutional and believe it. But, in America's family courts, there's simply too much money for those willing to play stupid for most to want to admit to having the requisite IQ of 60 necessary to see the indecency, irresponsibility, dishonesty, corruption, and nonsense in suggesting that the way things are handled today is reasonable.
America's family courts specialize in destroying the families of little children for money.
America's family courts specialize in threatening grave loss upon the innocent and their children and holding out their grubby hands for protection money like a bunch of Mafia thugs and then, seeing there is more money in brutalizing the faithful and their children, they deny justice, play ignorant, and ask for proof for things so obvious any child could see though it all.
Then if that wasn't enough, the government taxes the widows of adultery on the losses.

Pure lunacy ..
I suppose that the next thing will be that singles will be assigned living mates to "save the planet".
What a scam this whole "global warming" nonsense is.

Yet, another study by overpaid liberal American university ''scientist's" (looking to justify their employment) by finding one more thing wrong with the United States.
Jerry, La Palma, California
This is getting beyond ridiculous. It's just plain stupid.
May I remind them usually when people get divorced; they move to smaller places. They usually have to work and their kids are in school most of the day or day care.
Has anyone seen singles places today. There is no furniture because they are not there. They are lucky if there's a bed.

So, how much currency and paper was wasted in order that some flunky could claim to have confirmed economies of scale?
At least we were treated to a predictably lame comment from Austin.
Fred, Durham, UK
Now we have a REAL reason to fight against the stampede of divorces: Global Warming. The no-fault divorce process now in place denies due process, equal protection, and trial by jury of peers. For the one not wanting the divorce it is NO voice, NO choice, NO appeal...Done Deal...BEFORE COURT CONVENES. The one filing is granted a divorce EVERY time. That is NOT "justice for ALL". It is unilateral divorce: all the rights to the quitter/abandoner/deserter of vows/promises/state contract...with state support and taxes.
Billy Miller, Alexandria, Louisiana
It's too bad we in the USA have such poor grammar skills. Why don't we all proofread our comments before posting them? If you want to worry about global warming, check out 2 Peter 3:10 in a King James Bible. That's the global warming you should worry about! Not this silly .5 degrees celsius increase. Give me a break! I guess we just need something stupid to get our minds off of more serious things.
Dave, Minnesota, USA
Finally someone has noticed the impact of Court-Ordered Global Warming. It's not the divorce that does the harm--it's the court orders when children are involved. Just in fuel consumption alone the expense is HUGE. Then there are competing 'bribes' because children play their parents against each other when they get old enough to choose which home to live in--with the unbribable parent paying child support to the one who buys the most gifts/cars/consumable goods for the savvy child. Then there is the broken transmission of time-honored values and traditions that are replaced by the only remaining constant in children's lives--consumer media's instant gratification. And then there are the duplicate X-boxes and bedrooms, for starters. For those who scoff at these scientist's research, look again--finally, someone is looking at Court-Ordered Global Warming.

So none of their ideals is panning out on global warming, so they think this up?? And blame it all (mostly) on the USA??!! How many resources are used by these eggheads to do their idiotic studies??
Do I think divorce shouldn't be leasy to get....oh yeah. but not for this reason. Hahahaha........oh, this is just too funny.
GG, Phoenix, Arizona, US of A
NOT if the father (who is the one USUALLY KICKED out of the home!) goes to stay at his mom's house! Or brother's or friends...
But, again, it is the horrible American man (WHY ELSE would they not have used UK?) that does ALL these horrible things! HE'S the one who is to blame - always.
Justa Thought, Indiana, USA
Yeah, Let's make EVERYONE stay married to say the planet. Even if you hate one another, or your spouse cheats, or abuses the kids....no matter what.... Hey...maybe if people had less kids to begin with...we'd all do SO much more for saving the planet. Anyone that has more then one child biological child is selfish and could do a much better thing for the world by adopting a child. 2 things that win out there, the child FINALLY gets a home, and the earth has less humans using less resourses (since that child was already here to begin with)...
Dave, Bellmore, USA, NY
I never thought about it this way but, despite my thorough skepticism about the current Global Warming bandwagon, I have to admit that it is terribly wasteful of resources when families break up.
Add this to the many reasons that couples should do everything in their power to concentrate on keeping their marriages together, if not for their childrens' sake, for the entire community's.
Ellie, SACRAMENTO, Ca
YEA! lets save the earth with polyagmy! If two are better than divorced them polygamy has to be better.
Ken Lowder, Baytown, Texas
Scientific proof of what some extremists have been saying for years... that the push for easier divorce was to benefit corporations. Two cars instead of one. Two houses instead of one. Two washers, two fridges, two microwaves, more beds, televisions, more consumers, higher profits. Seemed unlikely that the grand plan could work that easily but there it is. That's what happened and now the environment is taking a beating for it.
