A decision on whether Britain will send an astronaut to the Moon, or even Mars, could be taken in little more than a year.
A study announced yesterday of the benefits of manned space mission is expected to report back to ministers early next year. Plans include the creation of an international space headquarters at Harwell, Oxfordshire.
Britain will maintain its commitment to exploration by unmanned craft at least until 2012, mainly through cooperation with Nasa and the European Space Agency.
The document published yesterday, UK Civil Space Strategy: 2008-2012 and beyond, puts as much emphasis on the importance of satellites that make observations of Earth – especially those to assist climate change research – as on spacecraft built to investigate the solar system.
The industry is already worth £7 billion and Ian Pearson, the Science and Innovation Minister, said: “Space technology is a vital part of our everyday life and satellite communications and space technology provide strong business opportunities for the future.”
The study of the prospect of sending British astronauts into space, almost certainly as part of a joint project with the US or Europe, will consider overturning the decision made in 1986 to eschew manned missions.

I think it is a great idea. Britain should participate in manned missions into space. I think we should contribute to space exploration.

Stop pinching the money out of my pocket to give to you best mates in industry to spend on these crazy schemes.
We want tax cuts. Not just a 1% , a real cut to wasteful spending. You can start with the Iraq war and cut down the size of the offensive forces too.
Cameron, London,
After Britain scrapped the great Concorde - it should have no say in manned space flights !!!!
Ian Payne, Walsall,
Who are these misguided monkeys who think that they can spend our hard earned money on any stupid thing they can dream up.
Time to elect a complete replacement set of MPs who need to demonstrate that they are working for the People and not their 'unseen' friends.

Utter waste of taxpayers money.
Maybe concentrate on a few minor issues. Like Crime, the NHS, Schooling.
If we cant beat MRSA in the NHS, have people robbed daily in the streets and teachers expected to be everything from personal after school babysitters to social workers.
Then whats the good of increasing taxes even more to pay for this folly.
It astounds me the utter tripe this government comes out with these days. Its laughable.
Besides, Ken Livingstone would tax the agency if it over flew London. he'd get a congestion charge up there somehow.
