Earth-like planets may have formed around most of the Milky Way’s Sun-like stars, according to research that shortens the odds on the discovery of extra-terrestrial life.
Observations using Nasa’s Spitzer Space Telescope have found that at least 20 per cent — and perhaps as many as 60 per cent — of our galaxy’s Sun-like stars are good candidates for having rocky planets of the sort that can harbour life.
The findings offer further evidence suggesting that such worlds may be common in the galaxy, which would greatly enhance the prospects for finding one on which life has developed.
Last week another team of astronomers announced the discovery of a star system about 5,000 light years from Earth that looks like a “scale model” of our own Solar System.
In the Nasa research, which was presented at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in Boston, a team led by Michael Meyer, of the University of Arizona, used the Spitzer telescope to survey six groups of stars with masses similar to the Sun’s.
The Spitzer can detect and measure the temperature of dust clouds around stars from which planets can form. The stars surveyed were grouped according to their age — the youngest are between 3 million and 10 million years old, while the oldest are between 1 billion and 3 billion years old. The Sun is about 4.6 billion years old.
Dr Meyer said the results, which are published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, matched theories about how the Earth formed. “We wanted to study the evolution of the gas and dust around stars similar to the Sun and compare the results with what we think the Solar System looked like at earlier stages during its evolution,” he said. “Theoretical models and meteoritic data suggest the Earth formed over 10 to 50 million years from collisions between smaller bodies.”

It is absurd to think that one small planet, Earth, is the only one to have life--be it aquatic, land roving, or other. Even if there was a god or were gods, why would she/he/they be so intent to minimize his/her/their design and strength and put life on one small rock. Far more realistic is to reason that life evolved out of a primodial ooze, and developed from single cells until precreatures walked or crawled out of the waters.
It is blatant bland insanity to think that one book--be it the Koran, Bible, Avesta, or any other religious tract was written or dictated by some supernatural being(s) to a select handful of scribes giving total truth to everything. What is essential is to recognize that these religious tracts are but plagarisms from other writings to comfort those afraid and without the capacity to investigate and understand their own world, shakled by the tyranny of religion and its inquisitions to root out dissent. God is another word for "I do not know won't study."

I truely believe we are not alone, and that where we fall in the cycle is irrelivent to the possibilities that exist. As technology advances so will our reach and perhaps one day we will understand that we may not be the oldest nor the youngest of worlds with life. Earth history has been proven time after time the complex changes that have occured and that evelution with climate will contantly grow in flux. An example is like looking at a sine wave, as temp rises the world is at war over limited resources and the population will decrease, and then this is followed by an ice age that again will decrease the populations of plant and animals that are left to re-establish itself, we will always adapt to the changes, even if is to transform into creatures more sutable to the climate.
Space is no different, our solor system is only one example of a biosphere traveling through space, earth is the main capsule with the sun as its engine and the larger planets as our defensive sheild.

If this has done anything at all it is to increase the chance of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe from a miniscule figure near to zero to a larger but still miniscule figure near to zero.
Many people, in particular, so called scientists, have rejected religion and turned to atheism. In so doing they have lost the belief in something, so turn to anything. There is precisely no evidence of life anywhere but on earth. We are regularly told we are arrogant to assume that we are alone but that's what the evidence shows. We are regularly told that life elsewhere is near certain, despite no evidence whatsoever. But it is purely a faith position, it is not science.
Whether this viewpoint is arrived at from a religious or non religious perspective we need to stop dreaming and accept that the chance of finding intelligent life elsewhere in the universe is truly very very small. Aliens are not coming to change our lot in life. We need to start living without this false hope.
